Remeron/mirtazapine-insane sugar cravings?

[tw...]

Recommended Posts

Been on Remeron about 4 weeks. Prescribed for appetite & sleep. (I'd lost 25 lbs in 5 weeks & was getting zero sleep.) From day 1 of taking it, i slept & got my appetite back. But now this past week, I've had crazy nighttime sugar cravings. I just ate 3 snack cakes, and am still craving more. Before this, I Never ate sweets. Is this the Remeron? This is out of control. I eat well/healthy all day & don't eat much dinner, but come 9 or 10pm, the sugar/carb cravings are insane. Anyone else? I take 7.5 mg each night just before bed.

It probably is the Remeron, but it doesn't need to be "out of control".  I had serious cravings for sweets and carbs while I was on Remeron, but my pdoc had warned me it would increase my appetite, and I was committed to maintaining my weight.

You could try dropping the dose, many do quite well on just 3.75 mg of mirtazapine. The other thing I would suggest is to eat low carb, that's the best way to keep your weight down on drugs that affect your blood sugar/insulin system like mirtazapine.

I took Remeron for a brief period and it did give me some pretty weird cravings, stuff I normally wouldn't have touched, stuff that actually seems pretty revolting now that I'm thinking about it.

It's true that you can overcome the urges fairly easily. I found that eating protein and drinking tons of water helped block the overeating compulsion. I put a couple of pounds on before I figured it out.

Then I was felled by a wave that's still kicking me, and dropped another 15 lbs. Definitely a lousy way to diet, I must say.
