Found an article with a great list of Excitotoxins which effect glutamate and excess glutamate's conversion to GABA. I cut and pasted and closed the article and lost it but will try to find the link. Pretty big list of additives! They mention it's impossible to avoid them all but it helps to avoid as much as you can. The article suggest a paleo diet.

 

 

Here are some of the most common sources of excitotoxins.

 

Monosodium glutamate. Keep in mind that MSG is found in numerous places you may not be aware of like most processed food, fast food restaurants, and it may be a binder in medications, supplements, prescription drugs, over the counter drugs, IV fluids, vaccines, and as a growth enhancer sprayed on crops of food and produce called Auxigrow.

 

Aspartame (Nutrasweet)

 

Glutamate and aspartate are naturally occurring in wheat gluten, hydrolyzed yeast, and milk casein (which means any dairy product that contains casein has potential for problems, but particularly cheese, which is a concentrated form of casein).

 

Other common food sources that contain excitotoxins include hydrolyzed protein, hydrolyzed oat flour, or anything hydrolyzed, sodium caseinate, calcium caseinate, disodium caseinate, autolyzed yeast, yeast extract or anything else autolyzed, gelatin, glutamic acid, carageenan or vegetable gum, guar gum, bouillon, kombu extract, anything malted, maltodextrin, many seasonings and spices, soy extract, soy protein or soy protein concentrate, or soy protein isolate, and soy sauce, textured protein, whey protein, whey protein concentrate or isolate.

 

The words natural flavor or natural flavoring on a package typically means it contains MSG or some other excitotoxin because they are used to stimulate your taste buds and artificially intensify flavor.

 

Other foods or substances that contain excitotoxins and can damage nerves include anything fermented, protein fortified, or ultra-pasteurized, or vitamin enriched, corn syrup, body builder formulas or protein formulas, caramel flavoring or coloring, flowing agents, dry milk, L-cysteine, egg substitutes, cornstarch and some brands of corn chips, citric acid if it is processed from corn, certain brands of cold cuts, hot dogs and sausages (even the ones in health food stores), many canned foods, pectin, pickles, any processed food, meats in mainstream grocery store are often injected with them, tofu or other fermented soy products, xanthan gum or other gums.

what has your personal experience with all these things been? I think MSG sensitivity is very personal; even when I was in fairly acute WD, none of these things ever caused me any problems. In fact, crappy junk food was sort of a source of comfort...

Oh I'm with you guys! I had fast food last night. Sometimes it's the only thing I can stomach; or starchy foods. When my dose plateaus I'm able to try more. For now I'm just cutting out one or two things. Stopped eating cheese puffs, but still eat a ton of cheese. The only options I found that are easy and easy on my stomach are Amy's TV dinners (do people still call them that?), frozen meals  :laugh: Seems those are pretty free of everything except cheese and gluten. The cheese tamales are really good.

Any msg really really set me off. I could tell when I've accidentally ingeste some. Ate some Doritos without thinking once and got amped up. Then I looked at the ingredients. Glad some people can handle it.

When it comes to so called excitotoxins its almost impossible to avoid them !  I was a big fan of the late Jack La Lanne , He had a saying and it went like this " If God did not make it dont eat it " for those non religious types obviously He meant mother nature . The next time You go to the supermarket spend some time reading the ingredients label on processed food items including frozen meals etc.

 

We live in a toxic world , toxins are everywhere and again obviously their is NO way to avoid them all. Also anything that stimulates any of Our senses during withdrawal can be excitotoxic including sounds - sights " tv " etc Background sounds such as traffic , cars blowing horns you name it . I am in the end stages of My taper and also have PTSD from being struck by an auto when I worked in the EMS field so every little sound makes Me jump out of My skin.

 

Bottom line We cant live in a sound proof booth nor eat perfect food but we can at least try to cut down on anything that excites Our nervous system during a taper and for a while afterward.
