jaw constantly moving / tense -- bruxism -- feeling like jaw is a "steel trap"?

Does anyone else have this feeling of CONSTANT teeth grinding? Like, my jaw is moving on its own and when I touch my fingers to the joint where my jaw connects to my skull I can feel it pulsing with involuntary muscle movement. It is driving me bananas. If I didn't keep my tongue between my teeth I feel like my jaw would close exponentially tightly -- it's like it doesn't know when is the normal place for the jaw to stop?

ANYONE???

Please tell me this is benzos and not my own weird problem...

This was one of the most prominent symptom I have had throughout this ordeal! Jaw cramping that sometimes radiated to my tongue and throat. At this moment I don't have that, I hope for good. I have read of many people complaining about jaw pain while withdrawing. There isn't musch if anything you can do to make it better. I tried avoiding situations where I had to interact with people because it was very difficult to talk while this was going on. I did notice that stress made this worse. If I was working in the yard or playing my guitar those symptoms seemed to fade but once I stopped it would come back.

I had that earlier and it has pretty much gone. But you need to protect your teeth! Either get an OTC bite guard, or go to the dentist and have one made. I still wear one quite often during the day and always at night. Chewing gum has been a life saver for me, but your situation may be different. Yes, distraction is very helpful.

Yes! I have it awful. Feels like I'm literally grinding my teeth down. My jaw is never relaxed & when I stress, it's worse. My husband can actually see it when I do it around him. Common symptom for sure.

Yup..... I get weird twitches and spasms too on top of the muscles being constantly clenched.  Now I've become very obsessive about my bite and jaw and teeth.

Yup the jaw and TMJ are only worse in these w/d days. I always had TMJ -- had to  have the biteplate adjusted recenlty because of some dental work and it was hard to know when it felt "good" -

If you can find a good chiropractor or massage person who deals with TMJ it will affect you neck, back, etc. and they can bring great relief.

Stress has to go somewhere.

good luck.

Hi Siqgirl.  I am sorry you are experiencing this to such a degree.  I think a lot of us have this because the neck muscles involuntarily tighten upon withdrawal (or so it seems).  That pulls on face/jaw muscles which is painful.  For me, I have trigger points in the cheek muscles which I can't release.  This tightness causes my bite to shift.

I like the idea of using a chiropractor or massage therapist.  Who knows?  It just might work for you.

I wish someone had a "cure" for that withdrawal symptom!
