Never hungry/Drifting

[...]

Recommended Posts

While this is not affecting me like other symptoms do, I'm curious - how long does this thing last? I don't feel hunger, or satiation. Have no idea when and how much to eat. Can't remember my eating habits prior to Xanax.

Also, I am about a year and three months off Xanax and just feeling nothing. No more intense agony like before. Symptoms get bad when I haven't eaten/slept enough but otherwise I'm just empty, drifting. Haven't fully resumed activities I've been busy with before. My life seems to have changed. Have no idea where I'm at. Going to work, functioning on some sort of level. Can anyone enlighten me? What do I expect now?

Hi Nony

I realise we're on different time-frames, but I can really identify with your inability to feel hunger.

It wasn't even evident to me that I had no urge to eat (probably, for years). I could never tell whether I was hungry or not. I realised that this was causing me severe difficulty early on in tapering - for I could go most of the day not realising that I hadn't eaten, and the signalling, instead of a hunger pang, was an anxiety attack. (hypoclycaemia). This, after a few repeats, was what drew my attention to it.

My solution was to eat "by rote"  several times a day, whether I wanted to or not. I actually had to "force-feed" myself, for my intake had been way under par for my size. I looked up a few sites and read up on what an appropriate calorific intake ought to be for my size etc and got into that, understanding that whether we "feel" hunger or not, our bodies still need regular, solid nutrition and I had been depriving mine.

So much came right after I fixed this and, just last week, I once again began experiencing hunger. (this, after years of not!) I have to say it was a weird and surreal experience! But I have since read up on how it is, in fact, all connected. A lot of people suffer panic attacks from hypoglycaemia alone and many anxious people suffer anxiety for the very same reason. I was one of those (and it was probably the orginal cause of me being put on Benzos - a misdiagnosis of "anxiety" for hyoglycaemia.)

"Under eating" is worth a Google. It has uncanny symptomatic coincidences with WD and anxious conditions.

:)

Thanks!

Up until recently I found myself bawling my eyes out every time I either overstrained myself physically (couldn't feel when I reached my limits; was drugged), or I hadn't slept enough, or hadn't eaten for a generous number of hours. Once I realized what the tears were coming from, I was able to guess what I needed.

FizzleWitch, where's the best place to find how much my nutritional intake should be?

And how many years did you have this for?

Although my depression/emotional deadness/personality changes are symptoms that bother me much more now.

I don't have a site in mind, Nony, but if you google something like "correct calorific intake by gender" or something like that.

Here's one I just picked out at random http://www.healthycalculators.com/calories-intake-requirement.php

Most of these sites are about "weight loss". Forget that. We need to overeat the right kinds of proper food to supply the right sort of raw material for our bodies to rebuild.

Find a few of them and compare notes from each.

Meant to add that I haven't been able to "feel hungry" for years and years. That caused me all sorts of trouble from falling into hypoglycaemic traps from not eating - from not getting it that I was hungry. (so, anxiety & panic)

This last week - after years - that changed, five months off, I get to "feel hungry" again! Nothing less than "a miracle" LOL.

But, before that, when I spotted what was happening and decided to prioritise food intake (manually!) - major good changes happened!

The body needs nutrition to function and heal, the brain is a part/organ of the body and gets its fuel from a well functioning body, therefore it's essential to take responsibility that your healing brains are  getting the care and grooming it deserves to get through this misery we have put on it.  :tickedoff:

Thanks! I checked it out and have found what my calorie intake should be, but how do I know how many calories I'm consuming? A whole wheat baguette, tuna, veggies, etc. And what kinds of foods fall into the 'fats' category?

You really can only approximate it Nony. Here's a site that can help you calculate. There are other similar sites - google is your friend

I found I was approx 6-800 cals per day UNDER what I should have been eating  :o

Best of luck!

Some people get into this cognitive cloud mixed with apathy. Not really depression but just kind of blah. I had this too. Very low-dose of stimulants could counterintuitively make you eat more and additionally move more. Like 5-10mg of dextroamphetamine. You'd have to talk to a psychiatrist about this of course.
