I have a taper coming up on xanax as soon as the doctor decides to taper I have seen all of the horror stories and I am pretty scared .I have no job no way to really support myself at this point and I need advice and help.  I also recently got off of hydrocodone  and I am struggling with health concerns over that. These medications were prescribed to me for a long period of time.  I am on 3 one mil zanax a day for a little over a year. I am overwhelmed what will happen to me and my child how do I get medical and community assistance. How do i ease my family and freinds so many qeustions and worries I dont know what to do.  I did try to taper thehydros soon after the hydro detox and that was terrible I took one pill out and was a mess and useless to everyone.  I then realized I was going to fast and went back to the prescribed dosage. I am worried I will lose everything here including my life and self.

Hello Lor63,

Welcome to Benzo Buddies! Try not to be frightened, it is possible to taper slowly and be successful getting off Xanax.  It may take some time, but once you read the information here you'll find a plan that works for you. Not everyone has serious withdrawal effects, keep that in mind.

A slow taper can help to minimize withdrawal symptoms. In general, a reduction of no more than 5-10% every 10-14 days is suggested.  Listening to your body is very important so you can adjust the rate if necessary. I'll give you a link to the General Taper Plans for additional information.

I'll also give you a link to the Ashton Manual, it is an excellent resource about these types of drugs and how to withdraw. It was written by Dr. Heather Ashton, an expert in the field.

How do you ease your family and friends as you go through this process? Let them become educated about these drugs and how they affect the human system. Let them read the Ashton Manual.  There is also an excellent thread here written by a very wise member that explains what is happening to your brain during withdrawal. It is written in a manner that is very easy to understand. I'll also provide a link for that.

We'll provide good support for you while on your journey to be benzo free. Please feel free to ask questions.

I havemany thoughtstonightand am wonderinghowI am going to stayafloat financially from thexanax taper. I have a daughter andmy doctorhas alreadystated Iwillneed to come off ofthexanax Ican only hopethisdoctor works withme properly.  Iknow some people taper themselves I will see my doctor tomorrow Ihope they listen to what I have researched and will help me in the best way possible.  I can only hope I dont end up in a loony bin from tapering. I have a supportive bf but how long can one be supportive? with such a problem as this.  Im in for a long haul indeed

I tried to taper it and takeing two one mg a day when i was on three and had very bad results I beleive I was going to fast so I went to the usual three again.  Like my doctor had prescribed in the first place I am in such a hurry to get off of them.  The feeling overwhelms me how does one cope when they can barely get out of bed or when there tapering? and I havent even started yet.  I also wonder what foods do I need to eat as I taper and what not to eat.  Im in a very vulnerable spot with my ex who thinks he should take my daughter because of me going to be sick.  somebody please help .

Hello again,

Your cut was 50% so it's no wonder you had severe withdrawal effects.  Slow and steady is the way to go.

I really hope your doctor will support a slow taper. Since you have a lot going on in your life and need to be a functional mom, going slow is really necessary.

I would suggest you copy the pertinent pages of the Ashton Manual and take it to your appointment. Not all doctors are receptive to this, but mine was and we formulated my taper based on the manual.

Good luck,
