Meditation and focusing on my breathing really helps. i also swim and that is by far the best way to distract myself and elevate my mood. Stretching helps too.

I take it in observe and accept.... if its thoughts I can't relate to I say ok, come in make it worse and after a while I actually think on something else, or I distract my self with calculating stuff. This is mostly when I'm laying in bed. Otherwise I just use the distraction mode.

You swim, I was wondering lately if I should start swimming agai, and was supposed to ask in here if anyone did that and if it affected their waves anyhow?

I think we all become masters of distraction. The longer we are in this state of healing we have no choice but to learn the distractions that work for us.

exercising, reading, doing chores, meditating, eating, Arts and crafts,BB. whatever it takes.

We do multiple distraction techniques all day long. It becomes exhausting sometimes but it is the only way you can put the time into this process.

The day you don't have to continually distract yourself to survive is the day you will know you are healed.

Just my opinion.

Amen

I say that and the day I am able to completely relax

I've had to deal with intrusive, irritating thoughts all my life, I wouldn't say WD has made them worse though, I'm too physically sick to worry about what's going on in my brain, or that's how it feels at the moment. Most of my mental sxs were actually caused directly by the Benzos, and stopped once I jumped. Two things I do, may sound a bit silly but it seems to work somewhat, is imagine each one in a bubble. Then imagine myself taking a pin and meticulously popping each one lol. Another one I've done since I was a teenager is imagine ramming all the thoughts into little closets then locking them in by putting loads of locks on the doors lol. I do have a great imagination  :P

There are a few things about swimming I think are beneficial:

1. You have to keep you breathing steady, which puts you in a good rhythm.

2. You're floating, which is always nice and comforting.

3. You are stretching your body and gently twisting your spine.

4. You're using many of your muscles, which is a great workout.

5. Aerobic exercise, depending on your pace.

The good thing about swimming is you can do it at your own pace, using resting strokes in the beginning and moving up to more intense strokes as you get used to it and better at it.

In the warm weather I swim at the lake a lot.  Otherwise I walk when I can often while repeating mantras or positive affirmations, or just talking to myself and the trees/God/whatever you relate to.

Distraction, distraction, distraction..  I usually have at least 2 things going....music, computer, tv, game....I was never like this before.  Can't wait for that day when I can sit peacefully without multiple sound sources running...lol

I had been swimming before and just continued to do so, plus jogging. I'd get aerobic workouts in about twice a week, no more than about 20-25 minutes. My taper went pretty smoothly, once I got on a regular dosage after a failed CT. Exercise always helps for me.

I also ride a bike a lot and I think that really helps too. It's a mild exercise, plus you're out of the house and experiencing scenery. You have to be safe, of course.

going for walks with my dogs and in the worst times: taking pictures of flowers while doing it. When you focus while doing a foto, you cannot not focus - and forget to over-think...
