How do you get past the idea that you will never sleep again?

Hi Cosair,

It is a crappy situation and I hate to read about people having to live it. Your signature says that you are benzo free, but it also says that you have used z-drugs, but says nothing about your current status with these drugs. I assume that you are not still on Ambien.

I'm not sure how to lessen sleep anxiety other than to realize that you have been able to keep going this long so you will be able to keep going as long as it takes. Easier said than done, but not getting too bent out of shape over sleep will help it come. I have always tried to just soak up the badly needed rest and try to set up a storyline in my head to follow. If I don't do this my mind starts to wander and always returns to worrying about not sleeping.

I seriously have no idea how people manage, that have to raise babies. I don't think I could have done it, my husband agrees, I'm not cut out for it. But I do envy those who have kids, such a precious thing.

Is there anyone who can help you with the toddler at night once in a while? Give you a break? HOpefully soon he/she will be old enough to understand that mommy needs to sleep.

Have a read of Dr Guy Meadows book called "The Sleep Book" - it is all about sleep anxiety in insomnia. I have a post here somewhere entitled mimdfulness/acceptance which talks more about it.. :)

I'm with meowie, I can't fathom how people manage households of other people while going through this. or at all! I know lots of folks who are sleep deprived when they have young kids, and they can resonate with my sleep stuff although it's for different reasons.

Corsair, I'm SO sorry you are going through this. I hope there are some people who can help you manage things around the toddler so you can at least get a little extra rest when you need it. "Rest" is the key, like Aloha said. It is a tricky cycle to break, I'm still struggling with it myself.

Back when I had newborn baby my anxiety was high all the time.  I just couldn't cope with being interrupted around the clock.  Eventually I took the "night shift".  I stayed up most nights dealing with baby's nighttime wake-ups.  I didn't go to bed until 5 or 6.  Then my grandma wake up at 8 and would look after him in the morning.  It worked well until baby was sleeping through (then I got another baby).  Anyway, that's how I survived without taking anything for the anxiety.  If I didn't have help I probably would need to take something.
