10.5 Months Off

It was real tough in the beginning. Walked out of detox after 6 nights feeling like a zombie tripping on acid. 3 months in, I noticed many symptoms significantly fading. 6 months out, I was feeling very comfortable in my skin with most symptoms gone. Now at 10.5 months I am better than ever. I can honestly say there are no long term effects of a 5 year addiction to benzos(2 mg xanax or 20 mg Valium per day). The point is that recovery works if you let it. Be patient. Trust in the light at the end of the tunnel that you cannot see. In the meantime, there are things you can do to help move it along while creating habits that will last long after you are better.(exercise, read, be sociable) Making excuses and chalking all negative stuff up to post accute withdrawals will not help. Exposure therapy is a big one that helps. A big part of this is being able to endure uncomfortable situations. Our nervous systems, brain chemistry, neurons are inequiped to hand the mult-facets of life without benzos. So relearn. The more you do, the less you say 'no' to, the more you will see the human capacity for change. It's in our DNA. You'll be fine. You are not unique in ur suffering no matter how uniquely crazy and ackward it feels. That's the double edged sword of mental instability. It feels so crazy that you think it can't be normal. And because we live in a society that does not want to acknowledge mental discomfort or wants to label it instantly as a problem, it never gets fixed. You fix it by living through it. Moods are temporary. Good luck and god bless this website.
