Hello citizen USA,

Welcome to Benzo Buddies!  Long term use of these types of medications can cause cognitive issues.  Those of us who are in our "Golden Years" must work towards keeping our minds sharp.  Coming off benzos was the best thing I have done for my future health and wellbeing.

I know of many members who after taking a benzo for long periods, just as your have, were able to successfully taper off and found their mental acuity returned once recovered.

Honestly, most doctors really don't understand how to taper people off benzos. Often the taper is too fast.  What dose of valium are you taking now.

Generally, a slow taper can help to minimize withdrawal symptoms.  A reduction of no more than 5-10% every 10-14 days is suggested. I'll give you a link to the General Taper Plans for additional information.

I'll also give you a link to the Ashton Manual, it is an excellent resource about these types of drugs and how to withdraw. It was written by Dr. Heather Ashton, an expert in the field.

I'm glad you've joined the forum. You'll get a lot of support here as you work towards being benzo free. Please feel free to ask questions, we're here to help.

Citizen- I was on xaanax for thirty years. I began a taper off it a year ago and took my last pill May 31st 2016. I have been xanax free for 7 1/2 months now. I am 60 years old so I spent half my life taking xanax. It was very very difficult to do but I can tell you it was worth it to be free of the dependence on a little pill. I feel that my mind is sharper than it was while on the xanax. Finally at this point I am starting to feel like I am coming out of the withdrawal- my good days outnumber  the bad ones. I feel like I can cope with my life now. My advice to you would be to go slowly at a pace your body can handle. Baby yourself - it is a battle you are facing and you deserve extra pampering to get through it. If you can- try to  avoid stressful situations or people who might trigger anxiety or surges of withdrawal. Lastly, do not dwell on the 30 years you have lost to  a benzo but instead focus on how much better your remaining years will be once you are benzo free!! Best of luck!!  It can be done!! I am living proof!
