Neurontin 900mg to 600mg, how long to stablize/withdrawal

Recommended Posts

Was taking 300mg Neurontin TID and went to 300mg BID with the suggestion of my psychiatrist.  I have been klonopin free since September 2nd!!!  How long to stable/withdraw to 300 mg BID?  I have some lethargy in waves for an hour at the most, some irritability at times and a some anxiety.  I dropped to BID on Saturday so today is day # 5 BID.  Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Like all meds, everybody is different, but when I went from 300 to zero, it took about a week for me to 'stabilize'.  My sleep suffered a bit during that week, and maybe I was a little more irritable.

Can you taper Neurontin by only taking it every other day, and then every two days, and then every three days, and so on and so on until you're off of it?

My pain clinic doctor said I could c/t off of 600 mg/day and feel no w/d at all.  Is that true?

I'm not sure what TID and BID means.

Wow, you and I are off Klonopin at almost the same time.  Hope you are doing well from that.

I dropped from 1800 to 300 in about 1-2 weeks. only minor symptoms left quickly. I am still on 300mg for sleep. I feel like a C/T won't be a problem.

still taking it for the benefit of sleep I feel outweighs the minor side effects 300 has on me.

Most likely, you wouldn't have a significant effect if you cut from 600 to zero, but maybe do 300 for a few days just to play it safe.

Withdrawing from gabapentin is a lot like withdrawing from benzos.  Most people have little or no problem doing it.  A small percentage do, but it's not necessarily the same people who have problems withdrawing from benzos.  I had a hell of a time withdrawing from benzos, but withdrawing from gabapentin was relatively easy.

I think a 600-500-400-300-200-100-0 (or a 600-300-0) taper over a week or two sounds better than alternating nights.

It does make me sleepy.

How do you taper like that if you have capsules?

You could weight the contents of the capsules if you had a milligram scale.  Probably easiest to request 100 mg pills from your doctor.

  • 2 weeks later...
I am coming off this as well. About a week ago I was at 2000. I'm now at 1200. The one thing I've notice with this med is once it starts to wear off, I clench my jaw, get bad irritable, and feel like I'm craving something. Anybody else get that? Wish I never would have started it. The short half life with really screw with you.

Hockey: I am off 5 days or so fully. I feel slowly things return to my normal baseline. I feel that gabapentin w/d if any, comes quick and goes quick too. you can do it

I didn't take as much as you, but I did notice a little irritability.  But that might have been due to me sleeping less as I was withdrawing from gabapentin (I mostly took it because it prolonged my sleep).  Like LOB, I felt pretty much back to 'normal' in 7-10 days.

hockey: yeah, on the edge and irritated for sure. yesterday was bad, but I feel it is leaving. and having the flu doesn't help either. and like bad I took it mostly for sleep.

I took a lot of magnesium and biotin as part of gabapentin w/d process. there is some stories that those 2 can help. don't have definite answer if they do. a good magnesium like liquid magnesium chloride is recommended, as you might know some forms are better then others.
