dream of being awake

Hi all,

Just wanted to share that last night I dreamed I was awake in bed.. and then I woke up for real, LOL. I had read somewhere that people with sleep issues sometimes do this - because we are hyperaware of sleep and anxious about it sometimes. I wanted to post this to share it, because I imagine maybe many times we think we are not sleeping, we ARE and maybe it's just a dream?! Just wanted to share!

When I was a kid I once looked out the window and saw a nearby volcano erupting and sending lava straight toward me. I was terrified until I woke up and realized it was just a dream. Then I looked out the window and saw that it was actually happening. I awoke again, but only while still dreaming (the lave was now closer). Finally when I looked out the window after actually awakening all was okay.

Before I finally got off Ambien I had a dream that my neighbor woke me up with loud music. It seemed so real. I went outside to knock on his door only to discover that my front yard had been transformed into a very strange surrealistic landscape. At that point my dream continued with my understanding that I was still dreaming. It stilled seemed so real to me yet I kept telling myself that I was in fact sound asleep and dreaming.

I have always had strange vivid dreams so I am not surprised at some of the strange things that go on in my head while trying to sleep during this withdrawal.

can't say i have too many dreams like that.. but i would agree that i think we might be sleeping more than what we realise.. e.g. there are times when i am awake and dreaming at the same time (usually early in the morning when there is more REM sleep). i am aware of being awake while dreaming, it feels strange but i know others experience it too.. i think they count this as Stage 1 Sleep? ie where you are transitioning..

teal, Aloha, wow, I envy dreams like that. Mine are always really boring about parking cars and work. Isn't it called lucid dreaming when you know it's a dream and can direct what you do?

1966, I remember something in the book you recommended by Dr Guy about that. When people were wired up for polysomnographs, they reported being awake but had actually been in stage 1 sleep.

I know that to be true. Many were the times when I insisted to my wife that I had been wide awake thinking about whatever, but she informed me that I had been snoring. I did not hear myself snoring so I must have actually dozed off. I truly think that we all are getting more sleep than we think.

That lava dream sounds intense and surreal!!!

I too, have always been a vivid dreamer. sometimes I have had pretty cool dreams about nature and adventures, but usually they are weird interactions with people or anxiety related dreams - usually about my car breaking down. I dream a lot more now since being in withdrawal.

I have the boring dreams too! I had to LOL about the parking cars mention. I tend to have anxiety dreams about something going wrong with my car a lot when i'm stressed.

Yes, I think it must be stage 1! now that I am aware of it, I try to make myself lay there even though I feel "awake" and tell myself "if I am patient I will reach stage 2.." lol

For some reason a lot of nights I never make it into stage 2. So I feel like I have ™ slept at all.

that's one of the worst things! even if you did get some light sleep. how are you going these days siggy? are things getting better at all? sending you good vibes. keep us posted.  :)
