Had apt with shrink today totally down plays benzo symptoms and addictions

I need a new Doc She says benzo symptoms are ones imagination and also downplayed high addiction factors. She asked Me how I was feeling and when I told Her about My symptoms She looked at Me and said " that is just Your imagination " .

She was actually praising benzos and went on to say She has some patients on up to 8mgs. I explained what I went through getting off clonazepam two years ago and how I had a seizure because another doc told Me to just stop taking it. No comment just ignored Me.

Years ago everyone accepted medicare not anymore especially here in RI. I need to find another shrink but very few accept My medical coverage. I thought I felt fear this morning after a really bad night but felt worse after I left Her office. I know some docs understand but I will bet they are far and in between. These are the people who are suppose to help Us in these most difficult times instead they just create frustration on the patients part.

I don't know how these people are allowed out on the street - never mind practice medicine.  >:( >:(>:(

Hope you find a proper doctor soon, Johnny

I would not wish this on anyone, but I wish they could feel how we feel for a week.  It's criminal that you were  dismissed you like that. There's a Benzo coalition started in the US  benzoinfo.com; how can a psychiatrist not know about this?  I can see doctors outside the psychiatric field being ignorant to the facts, but a psychiatrist??? Neurologists should also have a clue because the drug

affects the CNS, and in my experience -no clue.

I don't see psychiatrists any longer, not impressed by their field or practices.

IMHO , no doctor in my eyes is qualified to speak in no uncertain terms about this unless they themselves have ingested these poisons and have been subjected to a withdrawal process or cold turkey or have been extensively educated on this subject.

There is a reason these drugs are only to be prescribed for 4 weeks per the manufacturer.... it alters your entire biochemistry......This is a one drug fits all mentality and no such thing exists...

There is a girl who made a comment about this that touched a cord with me ; here it is:

These drugs need to be studied in reverse.....we study cars in reverse... How arrogant are we to think we can completely alter a persons biochemistry and think there is no price to pay for this.

There are genetic polymorphisms  that exist and is different for everyone.....if you were told by a doctor " I have a drug that can help you and you'll be fine or this drug could completely not agree with you and you may suffer a very long time for having taken it in ways you couldn't imagine" wouldn't you want to know? I would.

Its called informed consent

That's what they are fighting for for World Benzodiazepine Awareness Day.....to stop the misprescribing of these drugs.....

The side effects and withdrawal sxs of these drugs are identical and are a mile long...,

I suggest doctors familiarize themselves with the proper prescribing methods before they discount a patients concerns and sxs.

Shame on her....

It is criminal and malpractice

Johnnyapple may you get thru with all the help possible sent your way.... Xoxo

Since I've been through this twice I no longer tell my Dr. My plans. Ok it's not what should be recommended and it's my own risk. I just know a large percentage either down play it, Deny it completely, try to put me on an aggressive taper, or I've heard drop patients all together. Once again this is only what I do because I know this process up and down. My current Dr. now knows after I have amassed several months worth of pills. I was worried. She is being supportive and has no problem with me going slow. They want your business, no money in helping people off drugs unless you run a detox center. Than a detox center will lie and say you can come off them in a week or 10 days. I think they tell you what is safe for them ( your Dr. denying your symptoms so she feels less liable for the amounts she is pushing) my last Dr. Also claimed "he never had a patient have such trouble". He was 70 something. How can you tell me in your lengthy career no one has told you they got ill stopping these drugs. Please don't be discouraged, she is lying to you.

Wow. I can certainly relate to this. Had a very similar experience just a few days ago. Reacted as if it was the first time that she was hearing benzos might be problematic to quit (the psych who prescribed me C also made no mention of potential WD symptoms when I decided to begin my taper). It seems like this is a really common occurrence, but there is no shortage of people who identify with your experience. It is disgusting how someone could set you down this path and then completely wash their hands of any responsibility when things get complicated. Just remember that you don't have to look very far to find people who have made it through this and know how real this is. Stay strong and don't let an ill informed Dr. delegitimize your experience.

Great points here!!!

I would suggest looking at a younger(ish) Dr, but that isnt without its pit falls...

How do u vett a Dr, without paying to listen to what could b crap??? -not to mention the effort of getting there...

What community agencies could recomend a good Dr??

Would an email to a Dr's Practice, asking a few quick general questions even work???

Johnny, -i was told same (opiates) by the one psych that would have known better, the admitting psych for the rapid detox (that i found and wanted)... she was just testing me and being a bit*h, as we clashed when i said i didnt need rehab, just the detox... -as i was dependent not mentally addicted... -i was lucky, i didnt need her, so i could walk out... but just thinking about it makes me furious still...

just focus on finding that good Dr... it makes life so much easier...

Best of luck!!!

To follow up on yesterdays post another problem We have is when a person is going through a taper obviously they need to keep taking the drug so I have to just shut up and go along so I can get My script filled as long as the taper last. From the way I am feeling it gonna be a long time even with short time use.

Two years ago I went through the same thing and ended up getting off on My own with the help of members of this forum. I never planned on being on this again but I was in the hospital and stuck in a no win scenario with My life at stake so  I had no choice.

I did not know that the second time on a benzo is so much more difficult but I am finding out now in a big way. Also the older You are the harder it beats You up. I told this blank shrink I was down to 130 lbs from 160 and She said well You just have to eat more. We all know what benzo withdrawal does to Our digestive systems, on some days its hard to swallow a bite of food then to digest it.

I appreciate the responses and knew their where other members who had run into this problem. Once again I need to do this myself as many of You are right now. All I can say is heaven help Us all.

Often the case, so true... -but not always... -i trust my GP 100% -she is very over qualified for a gp, but recently started her own practice, employing 8 drs...(i started seeing her at another practice, -where i was dumped by another dr while on 300mg/d oxy, the day after my insurance claim settled)

-This IS new to her, and she spends much personal time looking at options and resurching... -but my so called specialists... -well, they r evil and are just after the money...

Again, -find a GOOD Dr, life needent b so hard... mine has saved my life, no doubt...

Johnny yes be careful and don't stop this doctor until you are positive you have a new more honest doctor who will help you. My old doctor who also adamantly claimed for over thirty years I could just quit them anytime (as he prescribed more and more) without seeing me in person for the last five years I went to him. Faxing came very easy to him. With many refills. Then he up and simply left his practice. I got lucky though and had a few months of refills 100 Ativan every 10 days) plus tons of klonopin. But what a mess. Other family doctors rejected me as a patient immediately because of the benzos. Finally I met me new family doctor who said you're in serious medical trouble with these drugs and admitted way out of her league but she knew I was in trouble. So she said I'll get you help with a benzo addiction psychiatrist and I'll hold you over on your pills until he can see you. If you agree to this I'll take you as my patient. So she was true to her word, kept me comfortable and finally I met my benzo doctor who specializes in only benzos. They both saved my life. They are both wonderful so Johnny good doctors do exist. One who readily said I honestly don't know how to treat this but I'll get you someone who does. And she did. She was honest but a good doctor as she didn't throw me away because I truly was so ill. But caution. Never leave this doctor until you have another who will keep prescribing what you need. Running out of these Meds is worse than listening to her utter, shameful nonsense. Bide your time. I experienced something similar with my VA doctor. I finally fired him. My life has been so much better since. He put so much fear into my head and wanted to C/T me off benzos and ritalin at the same time. I found a new doctor who is much more reasonable and understanding. Sadly this happens more often than it should. Not all Doctors are good. Simple as that.

Now I'm doing relatively well. Can still maintain somewhat normal life even after bad start to a taper because of that idiot.
