In need of help

Hi, my name is Kira.

I have been taking ativan for 3 years and am on 1mg twice daily as needed but as some of you know as needed quickly becomes every day. I started on them due to extreme anxiety, insufferable insomnia and fear of leaving my house. I thought at first it was a wonder drug but now know that is not the case.

I recently took way more than prescribed and ran out before my next script was due. Instead of talking to my doctor about my recent bout of insomnia I self medicated. Cold Turkey for 7 days. It has been a nightmare. I called into work for a week. I couldn't speak, look people in the face, stomach issues, I could barely walk. Heart palpitations, Fog brain, dry painful eyes, no appetite. I missed Christmas for the first time ever with my family. I was awake for 5 days before I slept about 3 hours.  I did get my rx filled but I want to get off these things and do it safely. I took my original dose yesterday because I was afraid to go another day without sleep and cannot call into work anymore.

Please help me begin a good taper method so I can be free of this. I have read the Ashton Manual and am confused by it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hi  :) Welcome to BenzoBuddies!

I am glad you found us today. The recommended reduction rate is 5 to 10 percent every two weeks. Stopping too quickly or suddenly can cause a host of unpleasant symptoms, some of which can be severe.I think you found that out the hard way.

Please feel free to post to any of the dedicated boards, we have a wonderful community of people here, who will give sound advice. Members have been through all aspects of benzodiazepine use and withdrawal and are more than willing to share their experiences.
