6 months off today

My last benzo was July 4th, 2016. This has been the most difficult and painful thing I've ever done in my life. I'd love to be posting about how I have my life back and am symptom free, but I've been stuck in a horrific wave the past 4 days. I'm a bit discouraged because I read all over the place that 6 months was the magic number of symptom relief. I had an excellent window last week that lasted 3 days, before getting hit harder than I have since my taper. I have no desire to reinstate, but have a fear that I may have permanent brain damage as I find it so hard to believe I'm suffering 6 months out. My parents and Dr. believe it must be another issue if I'm still having a racing heart and depersonalization and fear of driving after being off meds for half a year. Hopefully glory is coming, I don't know if I can go the rest of my days with a foggy brain, incapable of doing all the things I used to enjoy in life.

Hey buddy,

I remember being where you are. I remember asking myself why I still felt so unbearably horrible at 6 months. But trust me and everyone else, you'll slowly start to feel better. at 8 months, you'll look at your 6 month self and notice the improvements. and on and on. I promise you, this gets better. You will reach a point where even with symptoms, you'll feel like yourself inside. Your mind and personality will be intact. And you'll be able to keep fighting. Don't give up, don't reinstate, just keep going. One day at a time. I promise it gets better.

Congratulations!!!  I'm only 3 days away from celebrating 6 months.  Try to not to focus on what others say as they have absolutely no clue what your going through. You will get your life back and you will be a better version of yourself!

  • 3 weeks later...

Big congrats, Karuso!! I just got to 6 myself and am in a wave, thank you cold virus from hell and back pain...  I was also doing pretty well there for a while then bam and the depressive thoughts come and tell us maybe it won't ever be better but from what I hear it will. One day at a time is the ticket I hear. Way to go!!

Thank you guys! My brain has calmed down a bit since my last post. Very strange that the longest wave I ever had (17 days or so) happened so far into recovery. Still not all the way, but I have returned to work and do some driving when there is little traffic. (I live in Hollywood, which is almost never) I've had some weird mood swings as of lately as well. For some reason, remedial things will trigger a deep sadness that lasts for a few hours, as well as a few euphoric spells of energy and clear headed happiness. I never remember reading that as a symptom, I'd hate to find out I have a bipolar disorder. Fingers crossed its withdrawl and will heal in time.

Karuso2012 I've just gone past 6 months as well. It's been so challenging and I can't believe how long it takes!! I'm seeing some improvement now but am also scared that my brain might be stuck with these mental symptoms like anxiety/ocd/paranoia etc.

Karuso- I am at 8 months now and I can see a big improvement between  the six months me and the eight months me- I feel in the last few weeks like a curtain has finally lifted and I can think more clearly and feel more like the old me. It is subtle and didn't happen all at once- but the improvement is there- so hang on!  During this journey like you  I have also  had moments of deep sadness followed by almost euphoric happiness  and energy another day...don't think it is bipolar disorder but more our brains adjusting to our new life post benzos.  Congrats on getting to the big six months mark!

You and I seem to have very similar situations, I too was on 1.5mg daily as well as 100mg zoloft which I continue to take. Thank you for your response! I look forward to a clear head again.
