Can amoxicillin cause withdrawal? Anyone's symptoms gotten better on antibiotic?

I have a question for you all: is it possible to suffer withdrawal from antibiotics? Specifically amoxicillin taken solidly three times a day (500 mg) for four months?

Also, has anyone's withdrawal gotten drastically better or nearly disappeared while taking an antibiotic? Like, can amoxicillin treat/cure benzodiazepine withdrawal?

I just need to rule that out as a possible explanation for what I am experiencing (explainined in my last post).

Thank you so much!

Hi Angel,

This is actually something that I have been researching lately. Yes, it is possible to suffer neurological changes after taking antibiotics, including those in the penicillin family (such as Amoxicillin) which have been demonstrated to affect GABA and glutamate. Scientists have been studying the use of certain antibiotics in treating neurodegenerative diseases, as they seem to protect the brain from the effects of glutamate toxicity.

"Penicillins are believed to exert an inhibitory effect on GABA transmission due to their beta-lactam ring structure, which shares similar structural features to those of GABA neurotransmitters [41]. In addition, it has been demonstrated in rat studies that penicillin can quantitatively reduce benzodiazepine receptors and thus reduced inhibition and altered neuronal excitability [43]." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3175508/

And: "Antibiotics rescue neurons from glutamate attack" https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15949765

And: "Antibiotic Protects Nerves By Removing Excess Glutamate" http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/Press_releases/2005/01_05_05.html

"The potentially therapeutic properties of ceftriaxone for ALS have little to do with its antibiotic effects but instead result from its ability to increase the number of glutamate transporters. Glutamate transporters are proteins that vacuum up the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate. Normally, glutamate acts to excite nerves so that electrical signals can travel from one to the next. Too much glutamate has a toxic effect on nerve cells and has been implicated in neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS, Huntington's disease, Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy and stroke. Removing glutamate through the transporter prevents nerve damage caused by excessive amounts of glutamate. "Increasing the glutamate transporter expression and removing the excess glutamate is essentially like turning on a fan to clear a smoke-filled room," says Dr. Rothstein."

Hope that helps.

I used that AB several times during my taper and it did not affect me at all. I'm taking it right now and so far so good. but in not sick, just had a dreaded root canal 👎🏿

I got anxiety from taking Amoxicillin after coming off the benzo's and couldn't continue taking them.  Never happened when I took the Amox years ago before the benzo's.  Anxiety is listed as a side-effect of Amoxicillin that came with my prescription years ago.

At least one reason why I'm glad to be on benzos as I have to take 44 pills.👎🏿

Becksblue, I also posted yesterday that Amoxicillin flared up my anxiety but I had to finish the course anyway because was too scared of the chest infection.  When you stopped yours, did you switch to another antibiotic, if so, which one?  Did you feel ok on that?

I am wondering what to do next time I need to take a course of antibiotics, should I take Amoxicillin and just try to cope with anxiety until I finish the course?  Or is it not a good idea?

I never had any problem with any antibiotics before AD and benzos?  Are people become less sensitive to them with the time or is this how it's always going to be?

p.s.  I am 3.5 years off AD and benzos.

I had contracted Lyme disease in the summer of 2013 and didn't get to the docs for months later.  I tested positive for Lyme and got a round of Amox, but couldn't finish it because of the anxiety and I only took half the capsule at a time.  I didn't get any other antibiotic then either.  I tested negative for Lyme then the next time I went to the docs.  I heard that tetracycline doesn't cause anxiety?

I'm currently on cefuroxime which is another type of antibiotic. I'm also experiencing anxiety from it. I'm going to stick it out too because I also don't want a dangerous infection like pneumonia.

I hope the anxiety subsides when I stop taking it. It should go away right?
