Feel I can't breathe as i crossover into sleep

Last night right as I was crossing over into sleep. It felt as if I wasn't breathing for a moment. I had to wake up for a moment to make sure I was breathing okay then I went back to sleep. Has anyone else experienced this? It wasn't a Hypnic jerk I have those sometimes.

Maybe the muscles in my lungs are out of wack from benzos?

Thanks

Remy

I've started having that, just the past couple of weeks. Must be a random benzo thing.

Hi Remy

This was a major, major symptom for me, so much so that I went through testing for sleep apnea and sleep disturbances. I barely showed up on any of the tests.

The moment I'd fall asleep, my body just forgot to breathe. I'd wake up grasping for air. Sometimes this came with a hypnic jerk and sometimes not.

I'm 13 months out now, and they've lessened significantly.

Hang in there

Hey,

I have had this, and have had it a few times lately.. even this morning at work.

The first time this happened to me was last December, it was 1:45 am, cold as hell and snowy outside, and I was laying in my bed, trying to sleep.  It felt like I could not get the oxygen out of the air I was breathing, I kept trying to breathe, but it wasn't working out.  So, I pulled on some clothes and drove around town looking for pharmacies and found some type of "primatine mist" pills that open up your lungs or something.. I've never had asthma and don't smoke or anything, so I don't know what it was..

Then it returned a few nights ago, and even this morning.  So, I don't know what it is, maybe some type of anxiety attack?  I'm thinking I am going to have to carry that medicine around with me in case it happens again.. kind of scary!

Is this what you're talking about?

The first year in withdrawal and in particular, the first 4months off, I had real bad apnea. I couldn't sleep on my back because I would wake up gagging. It was as if my airway had collapsed. It was very scarey! It did gradually get better. You might try sleeping on your side or stomach until this all passes. I also remember very early in withdraw and even while I was taking Xanax, there was times that I felt like I had to think about breathing and was afraid of falling asleep.
