Since benzodiazepine withdrawal is very tough and so is the insomnia accompanying it, it's really difficult to find something that works. From what I've gathered, some have had success with OTC supplements, others haven't.

I'm personally taking 1mg of melatonin and 200mg of 5-HTP for good measure. I'm not convinced whether they actually make my sleep better, but I'll keep taking them for the time being just as a potential aid.

nhbuck,

I went 14 month with very little sleep.  I got a small dose of trazodone and it helped.

I did some googling and 5 mg should be ok, so you're good to go.

According to this site:

Melatonin is likely safe when taken by mouth in commonly studied doses for up to three months, typically 1-20 milligrams. In children, melatonin is likely safe for long-term use in recommended doses.

I disagree with 5 mgs... I read that you want to be careful or your body will not produce it.  My pdoc said 1/2 of 5 mg and not for very long.  Kyle, I think we look for easy answers and something to take.  I took it for a while and can't say it helped but that was when I was taking my 6 drugs to sleep (one of which was Xanax) and nothing was working except I was drugged.  I did try passion flower and Restful sleep from whole foods but only for 2 or 3 nights as I did not want to have to wd from them as I read they can cause problems w/gaba.  I think there are very few things we can take.  I do take mg glycinate 100 mg along with Vit D, but fear taking very much of anything.

I've tried zzquil .. main Ingredient is diphenhydramine it doesn't work for me but my sister in law likes it.  I have better luck with unisom and only use it occasionally.

anyone try zz quil

Same main ingrediant as benedryl. Yes, it can help, but should really not be taken more than occassionally.

I was going to say Nyquil or zzquil. Both of these helped me sleep when I was at my worst insomnia. I went away for me after 60 days I started sleep more and now I (11 months out) I am sleeping well again. I had such a fear I was going to die and also had to learn to handle suicide ideation. That is another symptom and once I got passed it I was able to start sleeping and now I sleep pretty well.

I really understand the insomnia and what it does to you.  Sleep deprivation makes it so much harder to deal with wd and all the other symptoms.  If I could, I slept whenever.  I wanted to sleep during the day.. anytime but usually could not.  Once when I was sick, I could not even then.  I would not worry when you do if you do not have a job.  You need it to heal.  Take stuff safely but the less you can take, probably the better off your brain will be and get.  No easy answers.  Difficult.  What works for others may or may not work for you.  Will it hurt you????
