Insomnia Help will one time small dose of an opiate pain med be dangerous ?

Hi All,

I am a new member and this is my first time asking a question.  I wish I had found this forum sooner, would have been nice to have support while I was tapering. Anyway, I have been hanging around here for a few weeks and now feel like this is a safe place to ask a question.  I also added a signature to my profile.

So, I finished tapering 3 weeks ago and for the last week I am having a very difficult time to sleep and it is starting to make me very depressed.  Before my last dosage, I was able to sleep with some melatonin, magnesium, and a little medical cannabis (legal here).  But the last 3 nights, nothing is working and I am miserable.  I do not drink or use any medications at all.  Currently I am not able to go to the doctor but I do have some let over Narco and Vicodin from a surgery a few years ago.  I do not have any addictive tendencies and I just really want to sleep.  Has anyone used a one time dosage of pain meds to get a good night sleep before they go crazy ?  :-\???

thanks

benzosrbad,

Stay away from the pain killers at ALL costs for sleep.  You might try hydroxyxine or trazodone; they both help me to sleep.

A prayer for you!

It wouldn't be dangerous.. But it could become a bad habit, right? Idk . But no, I wouldn't call it dangerous. IMO

thank you both for responding.  Maybe dangerous was the wrong word to use.  I just do not want to take anything that is going to be a set back or slow the healing process.  I am not worried about addiction at all, I really hate opiates, which is why they have been in cabinet for over a year.

Opiates don't really mess with gaba, which you probably understand so no, I don't think it will mess with your progress or prevent healing

As a person without the least "addictive tendencies" who nevertheless got addicted to opioids, I am always going to vote for not taking that first pill.  I know it's horrid to not sleep, but the sooner your body gets the idea it's not going to be getting any pharmaceuticals to help it, the sooner your brain will get back on track to doing its job of putting you to sleep on its own.

I was addicted to both benzos and opiates. It has been a rough road. But I'm in the school of thought that you can do anything in moderation. An with this I mean serious moderation. If you do it once or twice I don't think it would be that bad. But be careful, definitely don't get in the habit of taking opiates to sleep. I started out with one or two here and there and looked what happened to me. I believe I do have an addictive personality though. I know how hard the insomnia is and how terrible it makes you feel too. I know how desperate I became to sleep. I hope that helps.

There have been many discussions on here about opiates and benzo wd. The general consensus seems to be stay away from them while your you are healing.

I have to agree. I was addicted to opiates and benzos for many years. Now with no drugs in my system I am slowly healing.

Not much helps with the symptoms, except time and letting your body balance it self out again.

thanks everyone,  I decided to wait it out a few more days and I started taking some amino acids to help with depression and sleep.  Last night I did sleep some but I  woke up frequently, hopefully as the amino acids build up in my system it will help.

thanks again

I've been taking oxycodone off and on for terrible tooth pain. I have to tell you--an opiate never put me to sleep when I had serious insomnia issues. Now I need it for tooth pain, but the quality of my sleep is not good at all when I use it (very light and "chunky", not rested in morning). So it really isn't great for sleep unless you are in such pain that sleep is impossible. Plus--I can easily see how one could slip into finding an excuse for it night after night....

Totally agree with this--your body has to be forced back into doing this on it's own. An OTC med now and then isn't awful, but try not to make it a habit to reach for something. If the lack of sleep becomes unbearable (several nights with 0-2 hours sleep or so), you could look into going on something like mirtazapine or trazadone temporarily.

Congratulations on your successful taper! You are in the worst of it now, and I'm sure things will improve from here on out...
