What is the impact of Seraquel on Healing?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I am three months and three weeks out from a two week taper.  I was prescribed 25 mgs Seraquel in rehab because I did not sleep for a week.  I have been sleeping with it.

I've read some posts that folks think that this drug impedes the healing process.  Could someone explain that to me?

I am afraid to start tapering it yet and am wondering if I should wait until I have six months.  I think that acute insomnia would be more harmful than the seraquel.

Thanks.

I don't think it interferes with benzo healing since it works in a different way.

However you can develop a dependence on Seroquel, and may need to taper that too eventually.

Does the seroquel help with anxiety?  My dr. who thinks I may be bipolar has suggested this to me as a possible medication.

Not at the dose I am taking which is 25 mgs

Downtown girl. DO NOT listen to these ognorant doctors diagnosing bipolar. God this makes me so mad. You have been on a cocktail of drugs and that is why you are swinging between symptoms. Did you have a mental illness before drugs?

Doctors love to throw the bipolar label at anyone going through WD. I have been there. It is total BS!!!!

You are not mentally ill. You are wrecked and damaged from drugs. Simple.

If you continue to take these drugs you can be assured that you will only get worse and have more labels thrown at you.

Prove them all wrong.

Did seroquel cause you a significant weight gain or any other side effects like slow bowel movement?

I need something for sleeping as I slowly taper off my 10 mg of bedtime Valium dose.

Ive lost 25 lbs and have no problem with the other issue.

Does this drug make you very tired the next day? I'd like to try it.  :)

I am on Serequel. I started it a decade before my withdrawal. I went through a horrific cold turkey withdrawal from Ativan. I considered my self mostly healed by the first year. I take it for sleep.

it doesn't. but it can cause very serious side effects, like tardive dyskinesia, or diabetes being the much nicer of the 2.

at 25mg you will be probably fine for a while, but i would look at stopping it. i took 25-50mg for a while, and at some point i tapered it, and slept still good. (got it for sleep)

How did you taper the Seroquel?

Is the gabapentin helpful at all for muscle pain?  My doctor suggested it but I don't want to start another med....unless it has a lot of benefit and is not hard to come off of

Posted

i tapered it in 4 days. 50,25,12,7 and stopped. i think at 50 you could also just c/t

i expierenced tiny bit insomnia on 1st night without, but that went away quick.

gabapentin is very useful for both sleep and muscle pain and physical w/d symptoms - less for mental

it is not a sleep inducer like seroquel, but it helps stay at sleep I feel

Hey, as someone who was on risperdal (another anti-psychotic), for over 3 years, I would definitely NOT take seraquel!!!  These drugs have their own discontinuation syndromes and can really hurt us more than they help us.

I wish to God that I had never taken the risperdal as it slowly turned me into a zombie and now, I fear, I am a lot more "emotionally blunted" as I am healing from benzo w/d, and now, risperdal w/d..

I was doing pretty good at 6 months off of clonazepam, but then I tapered the risperdal, and I've had it rough since I began my taper.  My cog fog ramped way up, and I can't tell you how sore my body is, even though i stretch and work out regularly..

I can only think that having more drugs in our systems slows down our overall healing.  That's my 2 cents worth..

Good luck!

I see you were on Risperdal for 3 years and tapered of in 35 days.  :o

More like a CT

locutus... How long did you take seroquel for?
Posted

i had 2 timeframes

first one, i took it for 6 months (25-50mg), and pretty much c/t'd

then i had a 3 month break

2nd time i took for about 2-3months at 50mg, and pretty much ct'd (or tapered within 3 days)

I refer to your signature.

"C/T'd both remeron and seroquel - useless and dangerous."

Are you a Dr?

Because it sure sounds like you are giving medical advice here.

Some people here can CT meds with no ill effects.

Others would end up in psyche ward with a CT.

Yes these drugs have side effects.

But they can also save lives if individuals are suffering from suicidal ideation or severe mental illness.

A slow taper is always recommended.

it has prevented me from healing i think. I was only on a benzo for 6 weeks.

The seroquel does awful things with my muscles. But tapering makes me so sick i just can't.

I was started on 25 in detox as well.

Worst mistake of my life  :'(

I am on both Mirtazapine (for depression) and Seroquel for resistant depression.

I was extremely ill.

Now thankfully well again.

I have absolutely no side effects from taking these meds.

There are reports of tardive dyskinesia.

All three of of us are on a low dose.

As I understand it from a Professor of Pharmacology T D occurs in overdose. I spoke to him at length.

Also some severely ill patients are given massive doses of Seroquel. I have read of people on 1000 a 2000 mgs (scary stuff). TD may occur at these doses.

I mentioned to him reports of people who had been on Seroquel for 30 years who had reduced kidney function.

His answer "Any adult followed for 30 years not on Seroquel would have reduced kidney function"

All our major organs have reduced function with age.

Not forgetting that we all ultimately die of something.

He advised me to very slowly taper.

Corsair

I hope you manage to get off Seroquel ok.

Locutus

I am glad you got off unscathed.

I maintain a healthy weight. No diabeties.

I plan to very slowly taper the Seroquel after my benzo taper finishes.

what dose are you on? i would definitely taper at larger doses.  I believe seroquel at lower doses (below 100 or so) doesn't bind to dopamine receptors which brings risk of TD. it helped me sleep for a while, altough i don't think it was useful for sleep at daily basis. I'm glad it helps you.

My nightmare began in 2014 when I CT 10 mgs of Citalopram (Celexa) after taking it  for 17 years.

I didn't know any better.

Hence my fear of people CT any psyche drugs.

Some people can as you have proved.

Others cannot.

My friend has CT Olanzapine and Mirtazapine with no problems at all.

He did get blood clots on his lungs and nearly died.

Blood clots can be a risk if you CT any anti psychotic.

I believe my CT has made me susceptible to any future CT

I am on 150 mgs of Seroquel.

I currently take 2mgs of Valium.

I plan to wait at least 6 months before I taper the Seroquel after my benzo taper finishes.

I certainly don't like taking it.

My other problem is I am on the XR slow release and will have to switch part of the dose to the immeadiate release.

Do be mindful for the delay. It always starts about one or two weeks after a cut in my dosage. Then it takes me up to six week after the cut to stabilize.

I cold turkeyed risperdal before. And it only hit me two months after. So it's not a direct hit like with benzodiazepines. If you cut to quickly it could be building up and you would already have

made another cut before feeling the full effect.

Thanks Corsair.

I will copy and paste this info and bare it in mind when I start my taper.

How do you make your reductions in dose?

Posted

my pdoc prescribes them and gets them compounded, i have a knowledgable pdoc so that is one positive thing in my life.

You can find other types of tapers on surviving antidepressants though, there is a thread for seroquel. But if you could find a good pdoc it's always better.

I found mine through emailing dr healy and asking for a referral in my country.
