Has anyone experienced phantom smells during withdrawal? I don't mean heightened sense of smell, I mean smelling something that simply is not there.

I had a phantom smoke smell for almost three years during tolerance withdrawal. It got really bad when I stopped Klonopin and then went away after a couple of months. I was just bragging about how it had finally left for good ... and it's back today after several months. The first thing I smelled when I woke up this morning - smoke, like a pile of paper burning maybe 50 feet away. Only there is no smoke.

As symptoms go, it's not so bad, just really annoying. And at least smoke is NOT the worst thing to smell all the time. It's always the exact same smell for me.

It seems visual and auditory hallucinations are fairly common, but what about olfactory?

Yes I've heard it's common in wd to experience heightened sense of smell. In acute I couldn't stand to smell people's breath including my husband's lol..

Heightened  sense of smell all this summer.  I would smell every tree and plant, so very strong, like thick perfume.  Also could smell bacon cooking when I hadn't  cooked any for a month.  It was just in my memory.  This morning  i smelled cherry pipe tobacco  burning and I had not been around that since 1969. Wish I could push the delete button. Also don't like talking to people because the conversation  is on automatic  replay for at least 4 hours.  Also can not listen to music because it keeps rewinding and playing over and over for 24 hours.

Early on I smelled oranges everywhere, but there were no oranges.  I also smelled soap at times. All my senses were hightened, but the hyperosmia was one of my strangest symptoms.

Thanks Nana, your cherry pipe tobacco fragrance puts this in perspective - it really could be worse! A tobacco smoke would be terrible for me - especially cherry.

I would trade my smoke for Megan's orangy hallucination, though.

I smell body odor all the time, on myself, my husband and my dog. AND WE ALL SMELL THE SAME!  It stinks! And we all bathe regularly. Go figure, I'm the only one that smells it. That is, unless the dog smells it, and she can't tell us.😭

I had ashtray smell a few weeks back.  Finally went away

Bella, I read in one of your other posts that you only smell the ashtray in your house. Isn't that weird!? Sometimes I would smell smoke anywhere I went. Other times, like right now, it's only in certain rooms of my house. It's so good to know these strange symptoms will end.

I've been getting these too.  Mine have been a very strong spice smell and sometimes a cigarette smell. Today out of the blue I experienced an incredibly strong smell of citronella. None of the mentioned have actually been anywhere near me.

Well mine came back yesterday.  Sigh......

Has anyone had this actually go away?  Right now it's my main and worse sx and it's driving me to panic!  It's so strong sometimes I can't get a good breath in.  It's like fumes in my sinuses and down my throat and it smells like musty old persons home mixed with astray and mothballs.  I'm at a point I want to torch my sinuses do I can't smell anymore.  😢

While I was in tolerance withdrawal, during my taper, and after discontinuing I have had phantom smells of things that were not there.

During tolerance and withdrawal, it was cigarette smells and odd "musk" smells that I don't know how to describe.  During tolerance I did not understand that these were indeed phantom odors and did a fairly expensive encapsulation of the crawlspace under my house to address the issue.  It was only after discontinuing and reading about these things on this site that I came to understand that almost certainly these were issues related to the drug.

The phantom smells have become less and less frequent.  The last was in October.

FYI - I believe that the level of humidity in the air can trigger these phantom orders.  Drier air seems to make it worse.

Early in w/d I had a sense that my own body odor was really strong but my wife assured me it wasn't. Then about a year in I began smelling something like mineral spirits, a chemical smell that kind of burned. Would be constant for days at a time then leave then come back very randomly. It disappeared after a few months and hasn't come back. But it was really strong and annoying while it lasted. I hope yours goes away too.

lol, thanks Choco. I thought I accidentally posted on a food thread for a sec!

Yup, this one is quite weird for me, but unlike all my other sxs, I personally don't find this one distressing. My phantom smells post jump are:

Wet dog

Cannabis - a tad annoying when I realize I don't have a spliff on the go lol.

Cheese

Sour milk

Cat poo - mmm lovely lol. I thought my cat had crapped in the house once and spent a good 30 minutes looking for his non existent poo lol.

Chlorine - like the strong smell in swimming pools.

Cigarettes - nobody smokes in our house

Pipe tobacco - I'm not sure this is one. We actually have a ghost in our house (yes really, both me and S/O have seen him, and we have both smelled pipe smoke even though nobody here smokes and the neighbors don't even smoke pipes lol.

Eggs

Raw meat

Probably many more and more to come.

DappleApple...cat poop smell is the WORST!!!  But I, too, spent a long time checking shoes, sneakers, behind and under furniture, etc, LOL!!!  Thank GOD that symptom is GONE!!!

Isn't it just lol. I remember my S/Os old cat having a nice big one in the garden and causing him to almost puke!  >:D

I've had sooooo many pets over the years, cats, rats, guinea pigs, mice, rabbits, hamsters and several different species of insects that dealing with their leavings doesn't bother me in the least lol. I'm hoping to get a dog this coming Spring, depending on how I'm feeling. I was hoping to have one by now but I had to put it off because I'm too sick right now. I'll know when the time is right.  :smitten:

Back to the phantom smells, do you have one that feels as if you have some kind of chemical stuck up your nose?. It's weird and I can't really describe it.

This is one of the few symptoms I didn't experience. But i'm sure it will go away, remember that some symptoms can take up to 4-5 years to completely fade away.
