Fearful of going to sleep?

[Gr...]

Recommended Posts

I've been really aware of this recently. Since the 4.30 rude awakening cortisol rushes I think. They really are traumatic don't you think? I had an awful one Friday night into Saturday morning and I've not slept until after 4.30am both nights since. I mean the insomnia is the cause of that but I think the trauma of the cortisol rush I had early hours of Saturday does not lead me to even try and sleep until it gets light.

But fear of going to sleep. I think I've had this since being a kid. My mum said the other day I have never slept well. First time I was prescribed benzo's was temazepam at 16 years old from the doctor. The first first time I had them was by the dentist when I was having teeth out. I must of been 14 years old. Would anyone ever give this tripe to a 14 year old!?!?! It's criminal  >:(

Anyone else?

My neighbors kid is fourteen and he had cancer recently and while in the hospital they put him on benzos for three weeks.  I think you are traumatized by the adrenaline rush, but i also think you can overcome this trauma on your own or with a therapist. They could treat you the same way they treat ptsd and you would be able to get past your fear of sleep. There are all kinds of methods i think the emdr might be good for you? This whole experience is pretty traumatizing if you ask me.

Hi GreenTea1, I don't have cortisol rush you are describing but I have had a lot of trouble making myself go to bed. first of all I stay up all night everynight and only try to go to bed after daylight starts. I never have been nocturnal in my life but now I'm. Over the last month or so (I'm 9 months now) my sleep itself has actually improved. What happens when I go to sleep is that I wake up kind of in a panic, maybe like you describe. recently I have been sleeping actually as long as I stay awake past daylight. If I go to bed anytime at night I toss and turn until it is daylight. I don't know what this is, ive never done it before but actually I kind of am learning the cause and I won't go through them all. I hope we both find ways to rest soon.

I had been doing so well, lately, after jumping off of klonopin over 13 months ago but now I seem to be back in a wave (caused by getting a sunburn, I think). Anxiety - specifically panic attacks - have always been my main problem - and are the reason I started taking benzodiazepines in the first place. And sleeping has been a huge problem. I am afraid to try and go to sleep because my panic attacks always happen at night. It can be just awful at times. It's midnight now and I am having horrible anxiety and can't sleep.

To this day the traumatic experience of not being able to sleep still haunts me. I take several combinations of supplements every single night. I am far too afraid to even attempt sleeping with out them.

I would love to know what supplements help you sleep. I feel like if I could just go to bed and fall asleep quickly then I wouldn't be up all night fighting panic.

I had a problem with sleeping since I was little girl. Never drank anything. This year my insomnia got so over the control (have not slept for 3 months more than 3 hours per night) and than I got xanax. The rest of story read in my signature. Now I have night terrors, fear from sleeping, vivid dreams..It is really scary but longer I am away from xanax it is better.

I take magnesium,  inositol, valerian, melatonin and unisom in varying doses and combinations of each...without them I dont know what I would do.

Thanks! I have been taking magnesium and myo-inositol and I have valerian but have been nervous to try it. Time to try I think. This sleeping problem is starting to escalate.

You'll have to toy with the dosages some. But if you get enough in you they will give you rest.

Alot of folks are against valerian here but for me it was a matter of loosing my mind from lack of sleep. Once I resolved to the fact I would have to take them I forgave myself and things improved. I could in no way shape or form function on a daily basis without sleep. I was completely useless and a hindrance to my family. When I began sleeping again, everything changed for the better and I was healing at a faster rate. Im 10months off and doing so much better now. Each day brings hope and healing.

The cortisol rushes I get wake me at 4.30 or around that time and I wake up ringing and vibrating in fear. It's like a panic attack but a long drawn out deja vu type panic attack. I've not had one now since Sat AM but that was pretty traumatising like I say. I've thought about EMDR therapy and heard some good things about it. It's like benzo withdrawal exposes any trauma from the past too and makes it so much stronger. Don't laugh but I've had this child like fear of spiders come back too. I've put extra pillows and bolster in the gaps around my bed in an attempt to stop any possible spiders lurking. Like when I was younger I would fear falling through the chair at the cinema, the ones where the bottom bit would flip up? Hopefully as time goes on I'll grow up again as I recover !  ;D I think and hope this is the case.

I worked shifts all my life before having to stop work at the end of 2015 and will do my best not to have to do that again. But do hope to be able to work again!

Would love to have a really civilized grown up bed routine.

Thank you so much for the information. I know Valerian may be problematic but I think good sleep is really, really important.

Can someone tell me why Valerian Root is a problem?  I just started taking it at night because I have the worst sleeping habits. It really helps me sleep, but my head has to practically be on the pillow when I take it, or it doesn't work. I tried using 1-500mg tablet with no success. The bottle says to take up to 5 tablets! Not only does that seem like a lot, but it could get spendy!  How much do you all take?  Thanks!  ~CeCe

If it's not causing a problem for you then it's not a problem. Some people react negatively to it because of it's effects on  gaba receptors.

Thanks for responding Remy, just wondering how much do you take at a time, do you take as much as 5-500mgs? If so, how does it work for you?  Thanks!

I don't take any supplements . My body is still too sensitive . Last time I tried taking magnesium it sent me into a panic attack. I wish I could supplement since I know my body isn't getting or producing everything it needs right now . I think I have seen a post about valerian root in the supplement board.
