Why do you want off? Just curious...the next lower dose is 37.5 and then nothing. Tell your doctor you want off..I wish I had done that, I ended up on 225 mgs for years and years..

James, I just read a book on tapering antidepressants. Effexor, supposedly, is very very hard to get off of. I highly recommend this book, The Antidepressant Solution, by J. Glenmullen, md..

The doctor in the book I read mentions getting on prozac because it has a longer half life, then tapering off prozac. Effexor has a short half life .

I have had a terrible withdrawal from benzos BUT I tapered off 225 mg of effexor without any problem. Had been on it for about 15 years. I know others have difficulty but I did not.  I used a nail clippers to cut bits off the tablets and tapered over 10 months.  This was during benzo withdrawal and it made no difference to my symptoms.  You might prefer to taper more slowly and more accurately.

I was on effexor for a year (75 mg). I couldn't stay on it anymore due to work, so I started a taper. The cut from 75 to 3.5 seemed so easy that I jumped to 0 very quickly - this was a horrible idea. I couldn't move my head without having brain zaps and I was so moody that I threw my laptop once! I was on klonopin during this time.

My doctor prescribed me 50 mg tramadol for 3 days and 25 mg for 3 days after I came to him on an emergency appointment, crying. I had no problems with withdrawal after that.

This was probably the most painful withdrawal I've had, and that includes my first try at klonopin 2 years ago (fast enough to be C/T).

Good luck! It was scary but I got through it and it was quick.
