Liquid Valium taper

[re...]

Recommended Posts

Hello all  :)

I have looked on the taper threads and have found nothing about switching from a tablet to liquid valium. So I need to ask...  If I don't get a clear answer here I will ask my pharmacist but this is difficult in benzo withdrawal. I am hoping someone can be clear about this here. Reading the answer will be much easier for me.

I am on 7mg tablet diazepam. I take all 7mg. at bedtime. I will see my doctor very soon. I want to request liquid valium. Is the liquid referred to in mg. or is it called something else? In short, what is the equivalent of 7mg tablet diazepam in liquid form?

I appreciate any help in advising how I go about this. I am not confident my doctor will be very learned in the equation.

Thank you for any and all help in this transition. I am hoping to make my taper easier, and even thinking of a daily taper as some have advised. It seems some of you feel going down on a daily basis made your taper much easier, as well as being on liquid valium. I am assuming the amount you go down on a daily basis is very minute.

In the US, there are 2 Rx liquid V solutions.  The one best suited for tapering is Roxane 5mg=5ml Diazepam Oral Solution.  This a PG-based liquid V, 1mg=1ml.  To use for tapering, it should be diluted 9:1 (1mg=10ml), or even 99:1 (1mg=100ml).

The other liquid V is Roxane Diazepam Intensol, 5mg=1ml.  This is an alcohol based concentrate, and because of its high concentration, is not really suitable for tapering.

The diluted solution should be stored an a common glass jar with a lid, at room temp, and protected from light.  I always made enough dilute solution to last 10-14 days.

Most folks take most of the dose by tablet, and just the "cut" portion from liquid.  In your case, you might start a 6mg from tablets, and 1mg from liquid, or you could do 5mg tablets and 2mg liquid.

1mg V liquid=1mg V tablet.  Its the same med.  There should be no noticeable effect substituting 1-2 mg of liquid for 1-2mg tablets.

IMO, Rx liquid V is the easiest, most gentle way to taper.

Hi I had a similar question.  I am also tapering V.  My PDoc gave me 2mg tablets, so it has been easy to make cuts. When I get to 2mg AM/PM (4mg daily), she is going to give me a prescription for liquid V.  I was told by other members on here that the switch to the liquid would be no problem.

Thanks... I will print out what you wrote and show it to my doctor! I appreciate your thoroughness.

I just wanted to confirm... at 7.5mg I was having problems splitting the 5mg pills in half evenly, and didn't want the added stress of pill weight...

I switched to Liquid Valium 1ml = 1mg.  Also Rx'd as 5ml=5mg.  Same thing.  Anyways, I can tell ya that it's the same thing, and it shouldn't affect your taper.  If anything, i'll allow for more accurate dosing.

Funny note:  As soon as I switched to liquid, I found myself happier, more upbeat, and faster to recover from a cut, and able to cut again.  I don't suggest or recommend anyone do what i'm doing, but i'm tapering rather aggressively.  I'm going at a rate of around .5mg every 4-5 days.  It averages out to 1mg 10ish days which is reasonable.

Anyways, you should do fine with the liquid.  Word of caution:  The taste hits you like a hurricane.  It's nasty tasting stuff, but you'll get used to it fairly quick.  It's like a stale cough syrup.  Anyways, best of luck in your taper.

I had to switch to a liquid v + pills combo at a higher dose than I'd anticipated; despite lots of reassurance and advice on here, I was still a bit apprehensive re: switch (some people have to use milk/alcohol because the LV bugs their stomach).

So, I took my first LV doses with a bunch of buttery toast-mmm, good excuse!-but found I haven't had any problems, at least not in the first coupla months, so yay on that. And yeah, the liquid tastes pretty bleah! esp. when not diluted in water, but to tell you the truth, I now lick it off my syringe, blush!

An acquired taste, I guess ::). Hope your experience with liquid v go well for both of you ! The micro/daily taper totally got me going after I hit a wall with cut & hold.
