[Be...]
My mom is about 1 month out of Benzo use. She's really been suffering, agoraphobia, panic attacks, flu like symptoms, taste issues, depolarization...basically the full sha-bang of withdrawal. When she's suffering so bad she really can't handle it. Anyways, her primary care doctor is the one who initially suggested that Xanax may be the reason she's been sick for so long (years). Now, that doctor has suggested she see a new Psychiartist (not the one who prescribed Xanax and basically shunned her when she was struggling with the withdrawals). How would you approach this? Any red flags I should look for? Thank you!
[li...]
Maybe: don't go ? I mean, what's gonna happen ? More pills ? Give her a serious psychiatric diagnosis ?
[Da...]
I saw one psychiatrist that was really terrible. He was supposed to be an addiction expert but he was a rude ass. I found my psychiatrist online and he is an addiction expert and is the greatest. I would want to find out how the psychiatrist feels about people who are recovering and make sure he will treat your mom well. most well I think the one I saw was probably the exception and not the rule. I hope it helps you mom out, I was glad I got someone I trusted, how understands, and I can tell anything too. It has been very helpful for me. [Be...]
Be very careful. She will be OK in a year or two without pills.
[ca...]
The first red flag is the doctor passing her off. A real class act! She does need support and reassurance. You may do some searching in your area for a physician that is familiar with the withdrawal problems with these drugs. Any doc that tries to push more drugs.....look for another doctor or else just stay away. Support and reassurance are key for recovery in my opinion. Too bad the medical system isn't that supportive! [Na...]
Been there, done that!!!!!. I no longer have any respect for psychiatry. I was on antidepressants for years, and f inially got off a year ago after my primary doctors kept switching it until non of them worked. Made me very sick and became suicidal till I said, I'm done, no more. Best thing I ever did. I am where she is now at one month after tapering and stoping valium. Depression has been with me throughout taper and still continues. But benzo depression is 10 time worse than regular depression. I'm staying drug free and waiting it out. I'm suffering benzo withdrawal, every physical and mental symptom. , I'm not surprised she is too. I went to a phychiatrist a year ago. All they have to offer is drugs. He told me, "hurry up and pick one, they pay me a lot of money to write scripts". What an ass!!!! This was the finest mental.health clinic in a large city. I was.furoius. I came home and watched utube vidios on phychiatry and their DSM. Look it up!

Unfortunately, many of the medical professionals and all of the psych professionals chalk wd up to a permanent state of being. They don't believe in post acute withdrawal from any medication or drug. The psych doc will not do anything except add medication to your mother's body. The best thing my family did for me was provide me with a safe haven and constantly encourage me, until I started improving and believed it whole-heartedly myself. Your mom will get there. Promise.
