Bladder infection not better- what to do?

[Ja...]

Recommended Posts

Hi

So I don't know what to do

I have interstitial cystitis which was kind of dormant and ok

Then I got what I thought was a yeast infection ( it was) and an unusual bladder infection (cultured enterrococus)

I'm in agony

Started macrobid 50 3 times daily

Usually I get relief in 2-3 days

Doc said if no cipro or levaquin and I told her I can't take those!' Why are doctors so stupid.

God.

Idk what my options are and I haven't been able to walk well without agony for going on 3 wks now

Pls help w any advice

Cut out anything like coffee or fruit juices or hot stuff that could irritate the bladder, drink just water. I would cut way down on carbs for now--the fact that you had a yeast infection indicates your carbs are to high, and they feed bad bacteria. If you eat and drink really clean, I bet you can beat this!

Yes I always eat super clean and drinking water

I am in pure agony though I think it's a combo of antibiotic not working or IC

I don't want to end up in ER and they want me on cipro but I can't be on it while on benzo

I used to have frequent bladder infections.  My doctor always gave me a broad spectrum antibiotic at the office then cultured the urine sample to see if a different antibiotic should be used.

And yes, I would stick to my guns on the quinolones.  What is he thinking? Information about this is readily available all over the internet.  There's no excuse for not knowing about the interaction between benzodiazepines and quinolones.  None.

I'd go somewhere else... like a walk-in (or another doctor) if he doesn't order a culture and the correct non-quinolone antibiotic.

In the meantime, I drink all the diluted cranberry juice I could get down.

Two doctors I saw had NO idea about the interaction

One minimized it

Including my psychiatrist

It's crazy

Plus I had toxicity from it three years ago.. Now I know why... My infrequent benzo use. I had severe nerve pain for 10 mos and a flare up of my IC after 8 blissful pain free years.

All the pieces of the puzzle are coming together....

Not sure maybe amoxicillan will work. They cultures enterrococus

The problem is both doctors read the report exact opposite!!!  On the bottom of the quest result in opposite ways regarding which antibiotic to put me on. I need to go to a urologist next week Uch yet another freaking Doctor. Stay out of hot tubs while in benzo w/D! Lesson learned.

Jackson,

sorry you are in so much pain-sending you hugs.  I would research some herbs that specifically target enterococcus. I don't know if Candi-Bactin would help-it has thyme, oregano oil, sage and lemon balm in it. My functional medicine MD did a GI Effects Stool Profile test from Genova Diagnostics on me .  They found high levels of one bacteria and also included a page on what prescriptive drugs and natural agents would be effective against it.  Of course they said Cipro but, I won't take that.  Natural agents that could help it included:  berberine, oregano, plant tannins and Uva-Ursi.  Have you ever tried D-Mannose?  It's a sugar that helps keep bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall however, it might flare yeast infection.  I read one IC doctor's page that said she thought IC could be candida related but, I don't know.  I've heard that coconut oil is good for Candida.  I try to eat a teaspoon or so a few times a week.  I also take aloe capsules (laxative properties removed) and it keeps my IC at bay.  Hope this helps

Thank you

Yes was taking d mannose like crazy and cranberry but it flares my IC

Also d mannose only works on E. coli not enterrococus

Uch

Chinese herbalist wanted me on Chinese herbs but afraid of interaction and I don't think she understands those I think at this point I need the right medication aside from cipro or levaquin

Doubled up on macrobid too

Maybe the urologist can do a test to find out which antibiotic would work best for the enterococcus strain that you have?  I guess different bacterial strains are sensitive to different antibiotics.  Hope your appointment goes well

I get frequent uti's.  The last one took a month to get rid of.  I was on macrobid and 3 other non quinolone antibiotics till it finally cleared up.  Never did a uti take so long to get rid off.  It sounds like your IC has acted up or else you have a really bad uti like I did.  I had severe front and lower back pain.

Hope you feel better soon.

Wow. River so sorry it took so long.

Glad it cleared up. The thought of 3 courses of antibiotics would drive me crazy

The benzo lower immunity

What autoimmune issue do u have?

Also burned out thank you.. I might go to a functional medicine person

I had wanted to stay away from doctors.. But...

Can you take candibactin etc while on benzo?

I know it's the siebecker txt for SIBO which I have

Today I am going to give my culture in and see

Still on macrobid and will continue two more days. Then possibly start Chinese herbs if the doesn't get better but really scared to mix those w benzo w/d

I read grapefruit seed extract kills enterrococus and olive leaf

Can you take those w benzo ? I don't want to end up w kidney infection but too many antibiotics increases withdrawal for me and gets me symptomatic even before benzos

Good question Jackson about taking Candibactin while on benzos-I'm not sure...  Candibactin seems like it could be pretty powerful stuff.  I have a bottle but, am going to wait till later to take it-I'm afraid it might be too strong right now for me (I'm ridiculously sensitive to things).  I've taken grapefruit seed extract for food poisoning and it seemed to help.  Heard good things about olive leaf, too.  I hope the antibiotics will take care of the infection for you but, maybe a functional medical person would know if the herbs would be ok instead.  I always have to try just tiny amounts of anything new just to make sure there's no reaction to it and then build up slowly.  Hope this is helpful for you.

Did you take grapefruit see d while on benzos?

Yes I am like you.. Hyper react to everything

Just gave another sample today and going to doc tomorrow for check up

Not sure if u can get clear reading while still on antibiotics

So hard to say if this is an infection or my IC in a serious flare up which would depress me beyond

My Chinese med doc wants me on her herbs but idk

Everything interacts w everything

Too much for my system

So much regret about all of this!!

Hi River,

I hope you don't mind my asking but how did taking 4 courses of antibiotics affect you in general?

I've recently had to take 4 different antibiotics (z pack, cefuroxime, amoxicillin and clavulin)  in the space of a month and am feeling pretty wiped out.

I also did 3 back in December and don't think I had really recovered from that.

Mine was for respiratory issues, not bladder, but I just thought I'd ask if that's okay? Did you take probiotics and if so, did you find it helped?

Sorry for hijacking your thread Jackson, it's just not very often I see other folks who have taken back to back antibiotics.

Hope you feel much better soon. Bladder symptoms can sure get a person down.

Hi Chinook,

I was surprisingly fine after a month of antibiotics.  My doctor (a good doctor) told me while on the antibiotics to take a probiotic that has saccharomyces boulardi in it to help replenish good flora.  Without it most probiotics are useless while on antibiotics.  I found it in Garden of Life Primal Defense Ultra Probiotic Formula.  I took the probiotic while on the antibiotics and it seemed to really help. I am with you bladder infections are the pits especially while tapering.  Hope you are on the mend with that infection.

Take care,

River

hey Jackson,

yes, I took grapefruit seed extract while on benzos but, it was a small amount and only for a few days.  Didn't seem to bother me though.  Hope your docs can figure out if you have an infection or an IC flare-such different treatment protocols.  Sending you hugs

That's awesome about the Garden of Life Primal Defense because I just ordered some online a couple of days ago and am waiting for it to arrive.

It really helped to hear from someone who has also taken back-to-back antibiotics and been okay because I thought maybe I had messed myself up somehow.

Have a great day and thank you so much!

Chinook
