antibiotic use while using benzos

OK, so I'm having surgery next week, and I'm also at the end of my taper, so I don't want to do anything to spiral my symptoms.  I have a thread about anesthesia use during surgery, but I'm also wondering about antibiotics, because I know they sometimes give antibiotics during or after surgery in case of infection, and I know certain antibiotics can cause symptoms to go out of control.  I've searched the forums, and so far I've learned that the quinolone and fluoroquinolone classes of antibiotics are bad because they can cause the benzos to rapidly leave your system, causing symptoms to accelerate and spiral.  Also read something mentioned about Doxycycline.  Does anyone here have any knowledge about which antibiotics are OK?  Any information would be greatly appreciated.  I need it before I go to my preop appointment so I can discuss it with the hospital.

Thanks bunches!

Namaste.

I was recently on Amox - K - Clav for ten days for bronchitis. It felt weird, but the pharmacy said as long as I'm not allergic to Penicillin, it would be OK. I was weary and confused; it does make you weak.

I would continue to ask the medical professionals and pharmacists. I have been known to phone more than a few pharmacists, and they are helpful.

*bump*  I'd really like some input here, if anyone has any.  Having surgery next week and don't want to take anything that will disrupt my taper.  I know not to take anything in the quinolone and fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics, but I'm wondering if there are others I should avoid as well.  I know sometimes they will give a dose of preventative antibiotics before/after surgery.

Thanks bunches!

Hi Vangoghsear,

I tried in vain to find the antibiotic thread, and get answers about certain types, but I can relay my own personal experiences if it helps.

Augmentin, for which I took a one week course of (2x a day, 875/125mg) destroyed my stomach, and made a lot of my sx slightly worse, as always seems to happen when my stomach isn't doing too well. However, as far as CNS reactions go, I could see no reason why these are not okay for someone that is tapering.

Doxycycline is the one I am on at the moment (100mg x1 per day, 21 days), and it feels as if I've taken a break from tapering during it. It upsets my stomach in a different way, but once again the CNS instability is likely due to the stomach problems, as there are GABA receptors in our stomach.

As far as I can tell from my own experience, I'm going through a little more trouble because of my antibiotic use, but Augmentin cleared up my sinuses and Doxycycline is clearing up some nasty other infections.

It doesn't seem that either of them have directly affected my ability to taper, however I feel as if Doxycycline has affected my stomach or liver's ability to process my taper dose correctly, so indirectly yes. Apart from this I can tell of no direct CNS revving or interactions from either. Hope this is useful.

*edit - added dosage for Doxycycline
