Hi downtongirl,

I just saw this after replying to the Vistaril question. Sorry you are feeling break through anxiety :( Give yourself some credit for coming this far in getting off the other meds, that could not have been easy :)

I would most definitely choose hydroxiyine over heavy hitters like Gabapentin or Depakote. Let me ask you: are you weaning off the Gabapentin?

Hydroxyzine is pretty safe and quite effective for reducing anxiety it might prevent panic attacks if you take it say 1 hour before a stressful event and down it with a full glass of water. I used this to help me sleep early on.

As far as I know this is a relatively harmless molecule and can be used as a sleep aid or to reduce episodic anxiety. I take 25mg now and again when my anxiety gets too high. I would say that it has a very minor effect on me although my psy did suggest I take 100mg at a time which I didn't try because Im afraid, I think.

I don't believe it is addictive or leads to dependance.

IMO it can be a useful tool for us in benzo wd.. and is definitely preferable over gabapentin and depakote..

hydroxyzine takes the edge off. I was given it after I started going through withdrawal from ativan and ambien. It does make you sleepy but after a while I could function normally on it. It has no addicitive properties and no withdrawal associated with it. I dont take it daily anymore, just as needed and at a minimal 5-10mg dose at that. It's a better idea than most alternatives. Good luck!
