Newbie wanting to discontinue alprazolam

[Er...]

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I have been taking Alprazolam 0.5mg once nightly for a little over the past month.  I would like to get off of this medication as my primary care doc left her practice.

With such a low dose, and short duration, I would like to just stop taking this medication.  I can handle typical withdrawal symptoms, but am terrified of the potential for seizures.

Any advice and support would be greatly valued!

Hi, Eriq999.

Welcome to benzobuddies!  :)

After only a month's use, I would taper very quickly and not extend the time you're on the medication. The longer you're on it, the more likely a dependency will set in. Hopefully, you've caught this in time and you'll have an easy go of it.

A good resource about benzodiazepines is the Ashton Manual:  Professor Ashtons Manual

You'll find a great community of people here who will support and encourage you. Feel free to check out the forum and to post to any of the dedicated boards.

In addition to the Ashton Manual, here are some other resources:

For tapering advice, post here: General Taper Plans

For support with any symptoms you may have, post here: Withdrawal Support

Please add a signature (history of medication/doses etc). It will help members give you relevant advice. This link will show you how to Create a signature

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks Mind!

Thats kind of along the lines of what I was thinking... get off this stuff short and sweet!  I'll post in the taper thread to get some additional feedback!  Much appreciated!

Hi Eriq!

My dr. Prescribed me Trileptal to stop brain electricity, I googled this med before taking it, I was a bit scared, then I asked In this forum and some Buddies told me that this med is not addictive and with no side effects.

I have been taking Trileptal as needed (150 mg) with no problem and it is very effective for me. I read it is also good for avoiding seizures.

You may want to Google it, see If it is safe for you to take it and If Yes you may buy this med at the pharmacy and keep it close to you, just in case.

:)
