I am a guy 24 years of age.

I started taking benzos this year because of severe anxiety due to a problem that was bothering me.

I had severe anxiety non stop every day for few months even with the benzos.

Since I started taking benzos something strange happened.

One day I woke up and noticed that I have hair on my knuckles and even tiny hair above the knuckles.

I was shocked..since I never have had any hair on my hands.(I know a lot of guys and even some women have knuckles hair but still it was very sudden)

So I started looking if any other hair on my body  suddenly grew.

And guess what.. my entire body hair go longer and spread around.

What on earth could cause this? the anxiety?the benzos?

has anyone ever experienced such a thing?

I don't know, all I can say is many people report temporary hair loss, which can be very disturbing for some.  I had it, and mine grew back as it does for others.  Your excess hair growth may be from withdrawal, and if it is, it will normalize as you heal...

What do you mean that it will normalize?

The hair will fall out?

I want my old smooth hands back!

It cant possibly be a symptom of w/d from benzos right?

Anyone else has any idea what could this be?

I never had any hormonal problems in my life.

It's pretty obvious that my hormones caused it BUT what caused this at the age of 24 to be so sudden.

I have 2 questions.

1.could severe anxiety cause some kind of hormonal imbalance

2.Is hair growth a known side effect of the benzo it self or could be a w/d symptom.

I need more opinion please.

Thanks.

I doubt it's age because after the of 18 my body hair was pretty constant.

It's just weird.. because It was so sudden and all over..as if it happened overnight. :-\

Pretty sure benzos cause a hormone imbalance...not sure if anxiety can. I seem to remember reading somewhere benzos initially supress cortisol and consequently raise growth hormone and testosterone....don't quote me on that. I know the cortisol part is right though.

HPA axis disregulation/DHEA and cortisol imbalance and other hormonal things caused by benzo's. it will eventually balance out. i have no hair on my body anymore and some weird little hairs in places that it should not be. thank God, it's not too much. i know it will balance out as the body heals from the benzo withdrawal and the GABA receptor's heal and up-regulate. the HPA axis dysregulation is the worst part for me. i can feel the imbalance of that.

I don't want the hair in those places.and I don't think it will fall out.

Is it possible that it's simply genetics? its just its weird that for years no hair was growing and all of a sudden this sudden hair growth.(I am a guy btw).

I second the hormonal imbalance statement.

The benzos totally screwed my hormones. I started growing hair places I definitely should not have been. Just went to the doc, turns out I have high testosterone all of a sudden. Yeah, so that happened.

OBGYN is perplexed because I definitely don't fit the profile for PCOS. So I am being sent to an endocrinological OBGYN specialist to investigate this. How much do you want to bet they won't figure this out?

PJ posted something about a moustache half growth or something like that during his WD, I do believe upon recovery everything will go back to normal.

It's def' strange..

Why some people didn't get hair growth yet we did.

So your opinion is that the benzos caused the testosterone to go higher and thus causing hair growth?

It's really scary s**t since who knows what else it changed in my body.

I just want this hair to be gone.

And good luck with the endocrinological OBGYN specialist

Thanks! I hope it goes well too.

This process is a complete shot in the dark. Our bodies are interconnected by everything. Some folks just get different symptoms. There is a whole thread for Menstrual Cycle (you are probably not too interested on joining it :)) that has dozens of women's experiences with their hormones being thrown off by this. Ladies who stopped having periods, or get horrible PMS now, etc. Women are way more in tune with their hormonal changes, so it's more obvious. But my guess is that guys (such as yourself) are also affected hormone-wise by this.

FYI. This is my second rodeo on K-pin. And last time I started tapering, I started breaking out on my neck! I never even had that as a teenager. Then it totally went away once I was done with it.

Have you had your hormones checked?

Ha! It's my second time on benzos also.

I was without any med for almost 2 years and got back on them due to anxiety.

But back then I don't think I had any strange hair growth issues.

I did get my testosterone checked and cortisol checked after like a month being on benzos.. BUT that was before the hair started growing so it was normal.

Gosh if I ever get out of all this suffering and find out that my additional strange and new symptoms are caused by benzos.. I will burn down all pharma stores that sell benzos

Well actually  during this second time I took 3 different benzos.

Started on vaben for a month.. then klonapin 0.5-1 mg(and once or twice out frustration from anxiety 3.5 mg, yeah I know stupid.. but I was losing it).then Xanax 0.5 for about 3.5 months then got back on klonapin 0.5 again and then stoped.

Pretty wiled I cant even understand how it all happened.. like being 'caught up in a nightmare'(I made a thread named that way describing my story btw).

How old are you btw if I may ask.

i know your a guy. yes, the whole hormonal (HPA axis disregulation) will eventually balance out and those hairs that are growing in the places that are not supposed to be will fall out and the hair that has stopped growing in the places that it should be will start to again. now, i don't know how long that will take as everyone is individual.

i stopped getting my period and i'm not at the age for that to occur yet so i am hoping that will also balance out and i will have my regular cycle. i'm pretty sure that it will. also, for some reason i have more hair growing on the left side of my eyebrow than my right side.

just don't take any other supplements or medication during the process of healing from benzo withdrawal and it will balance out faster.
