Light/Sound Hypersensitivity - how long will this last???

[Ho...]

Recommended Posts

I have a bad case of light & sound sensitivity. I'm in my 6th month since a fast wean off klonopin & 3 months since ct off vicodin, gabapentin, welbutrin. The bright lights really bother me & cause a neuromuscular reaction in the muscles around my eyes & hurt by head & eyes. The bright sun hurts. The fluorescent lights hurt. The low lights ALSO bother me & when it starts to get dark, the changing shadows bother me. The bright computer screen really hurts my eyes & feels like its burning a hole in my brain!!! There is nowhere to really go to escape! I feel OK in natural lights outside if its not too sunny. I have spent as much time as possible just sitting outside since all this started. Now, it's cold & I can't go outside as much. Restaurants really bother me because of bright lights & loud den/noidrs from radio & people talking. I don't have many avenues for distractions because of this symptom!

Please post & tell me if you had this hypersensitivity & HOW LONG IT LASTED before it got better.

Thanks

I had it so bad that I was wearing sunglasses inside and if I was able to step outside I could literally count the drops of dew on each blade of grass. I couldn't drive in a car because even with the windows up it felt like my head was stuck in a wind tunnel it was so loud. It was intense and awful.

I can't tell you when it will go away because everyone has certain symptoms that are worse than others. For instance derealization has been with me almost 3 years now but some people never get it at all. You will come out of this- my senses are back to normal now from where they were.

In the same boat.  I currently can't go to the cinema; it's too bright and big and loud, and I keep getting distracted by people talking, even if they're only whispering occasionally.  God, I just want to relax.

I also have this. I started this year: in April (lights) and in september or october (sounds). Sensitivity to light has already eased a bit, but I definitely need sunglasses if it's sunny. I don't think it will ever change, although I never wore sunglasses earlier. I had a better period with sounds recently, but now it's worse again. I think it might have started with me visiting a dentist. I just shouldn't allow them to use their anesthetics, or how do you call them. This was the second time my situation got a lot worse after a dentist. Once it didn't happen and then they didn't use anesthetics.

I had it my ENTIRE taper. FOr 2.5 years. I used to wear sunglasses inside all the time. Everyone used to get on my case about it. I was sensitive to smells, sound, light, touch ...you name it, i was sensitive to it. I am 9 weeks post w/d and I have gone 3 weeks now without sunglasses. My smell is back to normal and so is is my sound sensitivity. It still flares here and there for a day or two, but it is mostly gone. It just sort of happened gradually.  Until I noticed I wasn't putting sunglasses on to go outside and forgetting to bring them with me (I have 15 pairs of them!). I was forgetting to bring ear plugs with me or my IPOD when I had to be out around people on the subway or shopping, I was forgetting to bring lavender oil with me, which is what I would put under my nose so I would only smell that if I found myself stuck beside someone wearing cologne or perfume. I also stopped using the white noise machine or fan  at night while I slept...... It really just happened gradually. Give it time. You did a fast w/d off two meds. Your body needs time to adjust. It will. Promise! Bama.xoxo

I had this sort of sensitivity for several months after jumping, after which it slowly got better.  I had a lot of visual and auditory distorations, as well as distortions of taste.  Bright colors bothered me as did jerky camaera motions on tv. I firmly believed that my tv was out of sync--the voices did not appear to synchronized with the mouth movements of the characters.  I almost called my cable company about this, but then realized that it was a sensory distortion.  I had "minor hallucinations," seeing things that I knew weren't real.  As an artist, I found all this "interesting," but I was very glad when these symptoms finally went away.  This will happen for you too, in time, hopefully soon, but the exact time that will happen can't be predicted.
