have you been impatient? What doctors do?

I have read that some of you go to the hospital during taper or after jumping, what doctors do?

During tolerance I went to ER once since I thought I was having a heart attack,  doctors did nothing really. Just checked quickly on me and asked to be off.

In April, almost a month off Klonopin, I ended up in the hospital with hyponatremia. I was in acute at that point, and taste, smell - all the senses were so strong that it felt like I could taste every grain of salt, which was too much, so I cut down drastically on the amount I was eating. Ironically, as the hyponatremia got worse, I started craving more and more water (I should have been upping my salt intake instead). My face looked like a chipmunk, and I was shivering (it was around 90 outside) and couldn't stop. I felt very ill and decided to check myself into the ER. My blood pressure went up to 180 systolic when the doctor came in, and I heard a nurse say that she was going to get a benzo. I told them no. She gave me some other pill instead, and I took that. Crazy now, thinking of it, that I would take a pill not knowing the name of it, but I was really scared. As soon as the doctor left, my blood pressure started going down, and it was in the teens for most of my stay.

None of the doctors understood benzo w/d. They said that I shouldn't be having any symptoms after a month.

About six months ago I went to the ER thinking heart attack. This was during a stupid cut from 2mg to .5mg every other day. Took it way too quick. Obviously. They diagnosed GERD and dismissed any concerns about it being related to klonopin.

The symptoms of GERD can be very similar to a heart attack. Did they check you for that?

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been impatient.

And the Docs at the ER- forget it. If it's not obvious like a greenstick fracture- they can't be bothered.  I got sent home with a bottle of percocets.

If you do have a medical Emergency in the Eugene/Springfield area, try to stay away from the Riverbend ER.

Every inpatient experience I've had has been unique.  It's definitely not a fun experience overall but you do get to meet some very um "interesting" people.  I've met everyone from people who see vampire bats all day and night to people who think they are Jesus.

But the main thing is that once you go inpatient, you have no control anymore.  I've never been to prison before but I guess that's a good comparison except I think prison is probably nicer.  Whatever psychiatrist(s) you get, they are going to polydrug you and send you out of inpatient as soon as your insurance no longer pays them.

Many places don't even have the whole assortment of psychiatric medications.  For example, one place I was placed in because I had withdrawal related insomnia/mania didn't have any of the "z-drugs" like Ambien.  Their solution was Trazadone which put me to sleep for like 4 hours.  They perceived this as a "cure" and kicked me out the next day or so.  Then the Trazadone stopped working completely when I got home, and I had to go into inpatient again.  It's a vicious cycle.  If you can avoid inpatient, do so at any cost.

Thanks for all your input.  ER is a joke unless you are bleeding.  Anything related to the problems created by w/d there is no help.  I went only once and it was suggested that I had a headache and treated as such.  I'm 20 months since detox and living in hell.  Drugs to sleep are really bad but understand that feeling desperate for sleep gets in the way.  Would never have thought I have permanent damage but it is rather evident in the noises and feelings I have in the brain.  I often get distraught about my future.

In my opinion there is nothing Doctors can do, even if they want to.

They can only give more drugs to cover up sxs, which is useless, doesn't cure

Benzo wd. The only way is to push through and let the healing take place ! :)

I went there just to be safe, because I have mental symptoms and can not be trusted at times.

They dont give me meds anymore, they actually invented a new diagnosis for me and are sick and tired of me saying the meds did this to me. They think this is my illness, that i think the meds did this to me  :idiot::crazy:

So for their own peace of mind they will not give me anything anymore lol!

I went to the Riverbend ER in Springfield Oregon for a then unknown problem (in retrospect- it was a Benzo W/D, DT's)

They thought I was depressed and wouldn't do anything other than berate me for coming in and wasting their time.

Like someone else said, if you're not bleeding- forget it.

Very interesting replies. Doctors cannot do nothing for us in withdrawals. Then also may harm us more. Few months ago, when I was experiencing like electricity inside my brain and so I was scared of seizures, I made my doctor promised me not to put me on benzos apart from my regular dose.

Even my regular Doc doesn't understand or is willing to listen to what I've been saying.

After the last batch of DT's he wants to refer me to a Psychiatric Therapist to 'help me' with some 'appropriate meds' to get me through my anxiety/DT's.

And he STILL wants me to taper off quicker than I feel comfortable with.
