Xanax to Valium Today

Hi all,

My doctor switched me from Xanax to Valium today. I was at .5 mg of Xanax per day and my last dose was last night. Today I took 4 mg Valium and now I'm feeling nauseated. Is this a side effect of suddenly crossing over or is this a withdrawal symptom?

Hi,

Valium is more sedating than Xanax, and in my experience, doesn't give one the "high" that Xanax initially does.  Some people feel mildly depressed on valium, though it worked well for me during my taper.  The advantage of valium is its long half-life.  Usually it's better to take both Xanax and valium for a time during the crossover, this tends to make things go more smoothly.  And .5mg Xanax is roughly equivalent to 10mgs valium....

It's both.  I see two problems here.  First, the cross was sudden.  It needs to be gradual as Xanax drops out much quicker than Valium.  Second, as Megan said, .5mg X equals 10mg V, not 4.

SG57: What is the idea behind crossing over gradually to the longer life drug? I have been on Librium for 3 days, replacing 2/3 of my daily intake with 25 mg of it. My Dr wanted to see how it affected me but she is on vacation for the week (?!) I am really tired and woozy.

Good luck

The longer acting drugs take more time to build up in the blood while the shorter acting ones drop out more quickly.  This leaves you temporarily too short on benzo.  Breaking the crossover into stages minimizes this problem.

OK but if you feel the benzo fairly hard within a few days, isn't that saying that you have it in your blood? How could you be short of Benzo if you are feeling it? maybe the argument is that these are signs of withdrawal. It doesn't seem like that but anything is possible.

The way I understand it the amount metabolized and leaving the body is controlled by the amount in the body.  At first input is much greater than output and the drug builds up.  As it gets higher and higher the amount leaving goes up too, until finally the amount leaving is equal to the amount coming in.  So longer acting drugs like librium and valium actually exist at much higher levels in the body than the dose you take.  Maybe 7-8 times more.
