I'm a 33 y/o med student who is on the last leg of a 30mg/d 4 year dependence. I'm at ~2mg/d and looking for advice on when to jump off. Taper has been from 15->2mg in about 9 months.

Hi 21p  :) Welcome to BenzoBuddies!

Congratulations of your taper so far. Because of the beginning mg amount I am assuming that you have been on diazepam/valium? Are you currently going through withdrawal as a result of your reduction?

You might like to check out The Ashton Manual it is an authoritative source on what to expect in withdrawal and recovery.  Dr. Ashton is an expert in the field.  She describes and explains withdrawal symptoms.

Please feel free to post to any of the dedicated boards, we have a wonderful community of people here, who will give sound advice. Members have been through all aspects of benzodiazepine use and withdrawal and are more than willing to share their experiences.

Hello21p,

Welcome to the forum from me too  :)

Congratulations on your taper so far, you've done very well and should feel proud of yourself! The lower doses can be more challenging for many members, I know they were for me and many of us need to slow down our taper rates at this stage to ensure that we keep our withdrawal effects minimised. How are you feeling at this stage, have you any withdrawal effects?

Most members tend to taper to as low a dosage as possible before jumping off. Personally I think this is a good idea and I'm sure it contributes to a smoother post taper experience. Many members use the liquid diazepam at the very low doses as this makes life easier for making very small, very accurate cuts to the daily dosage and you can continue tapering until you're only taking a tiny amount before jumping off.

I'm glad you found us and I wish you success with the taper.

Debbie

Just thought I would update and say I'm officially off benzos as of 4 days ago. Tapered down to .25 and held for a week, then dropped. Thank you for contributing to this oasis of support!
