Can you still heal if you don't sleep much?

Like many of us, insomnia is a big issue for me. Often it is burning nerve pain which keeps me awake for hours or even if no pain often only manage 3-4 hours sleep. For those of you further down the recovery path who also had major issues sleeping, did your other symptoms gradually improve anyway despite lack of sleep? I no longer tolerate other safer prescribed meds such as ADs which can help with sleep so don't take these.

The answer is yes, however it took awhile to get where I am now.  The first couple of months I slept very little, then it began to change...two hours, four hours, three hours, five hours, two hours again...no sleep for a night, great sleep the next night...erratic and unpredictable.  Now I sleep pretty well most nights.

So I was healing, even though I had a lot of trouble sleeping for awhile.

kimdb, I CT 8 months ago from ambien, and intense body burning (neuropathic pain) is my worst sxs. I also can not slep because of the burning, I used to get 3 hours sleep a night, but now is it only 1/2 hour naps 2-3naps a day, because the burning wakes me up and prevents me from sleeping. I take no other meds.

Eveything is worst w/o sleep. What may help a little is epson salts bath...I was able to sleep 4 hours after a bath, but be careful not too take too many espon salts baths in a week, unsure how you may react to the magnesium.

I feel for you, i so understand your pain, cindy

This is normally the way with healing. You might only sleep for 30 minutes max at the start then it will increase bit by bit as you get back to full health! Try not forcing sleep. Lay down in bed and rest, resting is healing. As long as you are laying in bed that counts as rest which is almost as good as sleep. If you sleep you sleep, if you don't you don't you're still healing. The human body is a powerful healing machine!

Hi there,

I'm certain we do heal even if sleep is poor. I'm still not sleeping well at 18 months benzo free but there has been a good improvement with many other symptoms so I'm sure that healing is beginning to take place. Many members seem to have sleep problems as a last withdrawal effect, this symptom seems to be one of the last to resolve but I'm sure it doesn't stop us healing.

Debbie  :)
