Low Xanax Dose

I'm not sure where to post this, but I've been taking 0.25mg Xanax every day for the past week. I know all about benzos, as I was on Xanax and Valium every day for almost a year and then I weaned myself off with no problems at all. I do still take them as needed for anxiety and stomach problems. My gastritis came back last week, along with the horrible panicky anxiety that goes along with it.

My question is this... Is it a really bad thing for me to take 0.25 Xanax every day for an extended period of time, say a month or several months, until my stomach starts feeling a little better? I have no problem weaning off it, as I did that before with no side effects at all. And I do not plan on going any higher than 0.25 (I know all about tolerance). I guess I just need some moral support since I'm upset that I have to take it now. Every morning I'm waking up with bad stomach pain, anxiety, shakiness, etc., and the only way I'll be able to even eat breakfast and get through the day is with the Xanax. I'm been in this situation before and the anxiety will slowly go away as my stomach starts to heal again, but it could takes weeks or months.

Hi teesmith, It sounds like you have hit tolerance, I had the same symptoms as you every morning. Benzodiazepines are only meant for short term, couple of weeks.  After a few weeks the body becomes dependant, have you not considered trying to find other ways of coping without these drugs.

You have been very lucky if you had no problems weaning off

Yes. I agree with Magrita. I really believe you have hit tolerance. The best thing to do is go down, down, down. Holding for an extended period of time might cause you problems. You may be forced to updose, and that doesn't mean the tolerance will go away, you'll just have more to taper, and in the end you just might get I/D problems. I'd nip it in the bud while you can.
