Xanax Addiction

[Ro...]

Recommended Posts

I have read about this site from Surviving Antidepressants.  I am not sure where to post this.

My daughter 26 is addicted to Xanax.  She takes 4mgs./day.  In July she decided she was done with it and stopped CT and had a Grand Mal Seizure.  She looked into detox and could not afford it.  There were lay offs at her job at the time and she did not want to lose her job or health insurance.

She tried tapering with a physician but it was fast and large drops in dose and she was having tremors and hovering over having a seizure.

She said that she has gone to see Psychiatrists and they all want her to medically detox.

I have read about liquid suspensions/titrating.  The Psych I see told me it is doable.

There is this group/FB groups and I looked at outpatient facilities in this area.  Please, I am at my wit's end.  Is it true that most doctors do not want to taper patients due to liability?

She said she doesn't want to go thru another taper because it was so bad.  I cannot get thru to her to check out these sites and see how other do it in an easier manner.  She needs recovery (12 steps) as well.

Please I am all ears.  Thank you

Hi RoxyLee

Welcome to benzobuddies,  I am sorry your daughters having such a rough time. These drugs should never be stopped abrubtly,  they should be tapered slowly. Its great she has you for support. Will her doctor be on board with her taper, I would suggest if she is prone to seizures, to work closely with a neurologist.  I will leave you some information:

Are you familiar with the Ashton Manual, I will put a link here for you: “Professor Ashtons Manual” It is an authoritative resource on benzodiazepines and how to withdraw, the general rule of thumb is to reduce between 5/10% every 10/14 days

Here is a link to our three supported taper methods.  Three Supported Methods of Benzodiazepine Withdrawal]

For tapering advice General Taper Plans Board

This link will take you to the Titration Taper Plans Board

For support with any symptoms you may have post here: Withdrawal Support

If you would be so kind as to add a signature (history of meds/doses etc) it will help members give you relevant advice this link will show you how to”Create a signature”

If you have any questions, let us know.

Welcome Aboard

Welcome  :) unfortunately stopping to quickly or suddenly can cause severe and/or prolonged symptoms. Multiple reinstatements come with the risk of "kindling" where each subsequent withdrawal is more much harder than the previous one. I suffered horrible as a result of three withdrawals. It has been a year since my last and final one and I am happy to say that I am 100 percent healed but I had to go through a very frightening withdrawal to get here. I would strongly urge your daughter to do a slow and sensible taper. This is her best chance to minimize the horrors of withdrawal, especially coming off that high of a dose.  I wish you both the best.
