Nicotine Saved My Life

[Ra...]

Recommended Posts

The joys of smoking. It literally saved me, I was in hospital recently and my God I forgot how much this stuff calmed me down. Now I'm not chain-smoking or promoting the use of nicotine but if you use to smoke and stopped it trying to be "PERFECT" or "SPEED" your recovery, no. You're not perfect, enjoy some cigarettes! If your doctor thinks it's okay, but then again you can do WHATEVER YOU WANT TO DO. It's your life! I'm gonna go enjoy my cigarettes some more. :)

Come on, seriously?  I really think most people on this board are looking to get healthy, not court cancer.  Sure you can do what you want, but don't ask us to agree it's cute!

Yeah, I used to think smoking "calmed me down", but eventually I realized it just relieved the WD I was feeling because I was addicted and needed another nicotine fix.

25 years smoke free!!

Builder--exactly!

Before I launched into the process of trying to get off both opioids and benzos, I was extremely judgmental about anybody who was hooked on anything, including cigarettes.  After going through this and finding out first hand what withdrawal to a substance feels like, I've done a big turn around and am extremely sympathetic.  I would hate to see anybody who's had the guts to get off of nicotine take it up again.

I've heard it prevents lung cancer . So keep going .

In all my life I had two addiction: cigarettes and women (well, second first) . Neither one hurt .

And the paradox of life is that I'm now dying thx to the doctors. Like Schumacher , he had run all his life at 200 miles/h and got his end banging his head on a tree.

This my friends, it is called Justice of God.          NOT

Some people can smoke comfortably for most if not all their lives. It depends on your genetics. If your parents or grandparents etc had problems with lung cancer/smoking then for God's sake don't smoke. People like me and alex23 can smoke all we want and you CAN'T TELL US otherwise. Smoke on brother! Smoke on LOL

I used to chew tobacco and as soon as I ct from ambien it made me a lot worse every time I chewed. I thought I'd never quit tobacco but benzo withdrawal cured me if that habit. Also cured me of my 7 year tramadol habit!

I've always avoided pills and drugs because of risk of addiction, and hastily rapid tapered anti anxiety and anti depressant pills including benzos many times, but finally benzos got me and almost made me kill myself. The harder I try to run away from something the further I get trapped in that, not only benzos but in other areas of life as well.

I was an occasional smoker, but haven't smoked in 3 years, I quit right after the benzo mess started, my teeth had started to discolor from the tar deposits.

I loved this post cause I loved to smoke, too. After my CT, I increased my average 5 cigarettes a day to about 20, and that helped me a lot, at least psychologically.

Then I reduced to about 10 until month 9, when a bad respiratory reaction to serotoninergics forced me to quit completely. 2 AD withdrawal was very tough so I didn´t notice nicotine WD, though it surely was there. Now I started to smoke my pipes, which I hadn´t touched in more than a year, due to anxiety. The best sign that my anxiety diminished is precisely that I can again sit on the patio and light my pipe, or go stroll about with it every once in a while, although I am still 90% housebound.

I love cigars, too. I have some Cuban stuff waiting for my lighter here.  :D

Nicotine is actually really good for cognitive function and memory, which would be beneficial in WD. I'm not suggesting someone start smoking, since carcinogens are unhealthy, but the gum or patch might help some, just be aware its a stimulant and may initially rev symptoms. I think I might try some. They give patches to alzheimers. And dementia patients with some success

Nicotine is a stimulat. Is that a good idea when in benzo WD? Thousands of people die every day from smoking. Zero do from not.

I hadn't heard that nicotine is good for cognitive function and memory, in fact I've heard the opposite.

There was a report provided by World Health Organization that suggests smokers have a 45% higher risk of developing dementia than non-smokers.

I'm trying to taper but it doesn't seem to be working out. I got an rx for Champix from my respirologist but I've heard some scarey things about possible side effects.

I wish I had the guts right now to just quit C/T, since I only smoke 4 a day. But I've tried and tried to no good. I know it's a stimulant and I was put on benzos for anxiety, so does that make sense to stay on ciggies? NO! It just means I have to try harder. That is my 2nd goal other then getting off benzos. Not only can it cause lung cancer, but it makes you age and stains your teeth, and in general there is nothing appealing about it. Plus, it can offend non smokers. If you don't believe how it can age a person. Then look at two pictures: One of Joni Mitchell, who began smoking at the age of 8 and now smokes three packs a day and is 71. Then look at a picture of Christine McVie, same age, who never smoked. If you look at both, then you'll know what I am talking about. Nicotine = bad news. Plus all of those nasty chemicals they put in them.

Well, nicotine can be helpful, and someone posted a study about that. 4 cigarettes a day represent a very low risk. Maybe you could try when you feel better from withdrawal, to avoid putting extra physical and psychological stress on the brain. Just an idea.

I am glad I had cigarettes to accompany me thru the withdrawal process even though I always had in the back of my mind the knowing that smoking too would have to go when the time came.  Finally last fall, after fretting over the breathing problems I was having and diagnosed with COPD, I decided it was time to stop.  I was good and scared.  I was smoking half a pack a day at that point.

Sept. 7/14 was my quit day.  I definitely would not take an Rx drug like Champix to stop but I did start chewing gum like crazy.  I bought some Indian herbal type cigarettes which I puffed on but did not inhale.  They tasted horrid but were a good substitute for the habit part of sucking on a cigarette and blowing the smoke.  I rarely have one of those now, that too just fell away.

The best of luck to all that are addicted to cigarettes.  I'm happy I don't have to do that anymore.

I quit smoking cigarettes 2 months ago, now only 2-3 pipes a day (and I love it). IMHO, the best psychological help methos is, instead of thos indian cigarettes, electronic ones. You can also taper nicotin with them, with no known harm as yet.

I tried an electronic one at quitting time and inhaling it made me cough with each inhale.  I think I found a really good solution for myself because it worked in the end to break the nicotine and the smoking habit.  Do what you have to do, there is no best for everyone.

I smoke a vape. Besides my addiction to Starbucks chai lattes it's my only enjoyment. I'm in the rut of four months and all i care about is getting through this detox. Everything else is on hold. I hope u enjoy your smokes and don't beat yourself up. I also drink a lot of caffeine. Anything legal to subside this is a beautiful thing. If I could I would put a  joint in my mouth but I have addiction tendencies so I haven't but if that helps people I'm for it

I love my cigarettes, don't care what anyone else says. They help me cope with this stressful hell right now. I'll quit when I am good and ready, wish I could grow some tobacco.
