New Dr. Wants me to taper to 75 mgs of my 100 mgs librium starting today HELP!!!!

I have been taking 25 mgs 4x a day since February my sig explains the attempts at dropping and being reinstated. librium in and of itself is hard to taper the lowest I ever got to was 90 mgs this was by dropping 5 mgs at a time this was last april then was reinstated to 95 then did one mg drops till I got to 93 the sxs were horrific I was bedridden by 93 mgs. This county Dr. Doesn't even give me a refill of insyruct me on when to take my pills just wants me to taper from 4x 25 mg a day to 3x 25 a day is it just me or does this seem extremely dangerous?! Considering 5 mg drops in the past have ended up with me in the ER?! I Was trying to figure out a liquid titration now this. I Still have some old 5 mgs caps left and some 10s so my husband and I were thinking try the 5 mg drop again. But this Dr. Thinks thats too slow and says "you're not going to die" I have a history of seisures and my fil cousin just had a stroke at 48 yrs old and they are going to pull him off life support. What do I do guys?! What do you think? Help please, especially from the people who know the battles Ive gone through. Ty Mo2

I'm sorry there haven't been any replies, Mof2.  I'm not sure anyone knows what's the best thing to do here.  It sounds like the doctor is calling the shots now, unfortunately.

Actually today got a call today from my Dr. Up north who says I need to get a 2nd opinion. Then my social worker calls and said her bosses told me to stay exactly where Im at until I see the other Dr. And see what he thinks. So at the moment Im still at 100 mgs. I'm Hoping this other Dr. Is more willing to work with me or at least listen to me! My Dr. From up north said that eith my history of deleriym tremens that if my heart rate gets above 110 or my bp 140/100 or if I'm having tremors and sweats and especially if Im hallucinating go to the ER. This is when I was telling him about dropping today by 5 mgs and he said take good care of yourself. He's worried because of my history of dtz and seisures during my alcohol wd in the past. So dors this seem like it's worth a shot? let me know guys. Ty- Mo2

Fortunately Librium has a very long half-life. 36-200hrs. Although chlordiazpoxide itself has 5-30hr half life it also has the active metabolite desmethyldiazepam which is up to 200 hours.

 

This makes it one of the best benzodiazepines to safely taper off of. Also it's a higher dosage benzo and has 5mg and 10mg capsules so you can tailor your taper schedule to fit around your lifestyle and symptoms without worrying about pill cutting/titration etc.

 

A taper of 5mg every 1-2 weeks should help to keep most withdrawal effects at a minimum. The Ashton manual suggests this for it's long taper of Librium.

Unfortunately not the other Dr. I saw for the 2nd opinion says hes never rxd Librium in his life has no idea how to taper people from it and was recomending I go to a detox. But said he will see if he can find any addiction specialists who might know more. I feel so stuck and so depressed part of me wants to do the detox just to sabotouge myself so they understand this isn't like coming off alcohol or opiates! I need a Doctor psych, addiction specialist I don't care anymore just someone in so cal that can help me! Please if anyone knows of anyone in OC california or nearby help!! I do have MDD, GAD,panic disorder w/ agoraphobia and this is was before I was on benzos!  This is the worst time of year for me and may be bipolar! Please this would be a xmas miracle! Please please please!
