Healing of the central nervous system after benzo exposure

Ok, somewhere here I read something to the effect of knowing someone I believe who studied neurology and reported that in order for the nervous systems to heal/repair post benzos it takes 3-5 years and total abstinence from any all psychotropic substances......

Hmm, not sure now where I read that. Does that ring a bell with anyone?

I've seen it and feel like it's gonna be that way for myself. However, lots of people heal faster and are able to drink alcohol occasionally. Do I recommend that, no way but some are brave enough to try it when they feel a little better and are fine. Others suffer from alcohol. I can't even take vitamins so I don't even think about alcohol or any other gaba agonists.

Thank you milan and cool.....I am feeling a little overwhelmed by the time frame right now, as my recent setback has really taken at toll....I'm 7 months out and as bad as I was at one month right now......

Keep your head up it will get better. Around that time was some of the worst waves for me too, but i did see some clarity soon after that, maybe 8-10 months.

Things got much better after that too. At 3 years I still have some symptoms but honestly 90% of time I don't notice them, and live as I would otherwise.

I've had many, happy and great days in the last 2 years, things are getting better, but a wave like any other puts you back to your knees most of the time :(

I too need to read this as I am also 7 months out and feel like I'm at the beginning of this journey or worse as it was not this bad early on. This just seems to competely take over your life, at times I wonder how I can make it through. All I want to do is sleep although I can't at night. i've just managed a nap and waking from it was like returning to hell. It is so hard to believe that you are healing while going through times like this. I don't know what to do to help myself sometimes.

well if you look back 2-3 years ago to some of us it just seems like yesterday right?

think positive 2-3 years from now when your healed you can look back to 2014 and remember you were healing in 2014 , theres some very good advice to read here on bb good guidance what to do to make these 2-3 years of healing less painfull

I did a cold turkey withdrawal from 8mg of Ativan. I went through a horrific withdrawal but I will be one year out in just two weeks and I am 100 percent healed.....so for me it did not take 3 to 5 years. Although I do agree it takes a bit for the CNS to heal, and we all heal at different rates.

I think this is a worst case scenario which doesn't apply to most people.  I was on high doses for 13 years, used other "psych drugs" at times, had two reinstatements and kindled.  Even so, it only took me two years to fully heal.

I'm going to put my money on the shorter time frame. Thanks for sharing. Wondering why it's so hard to accept that time is the healer, or rather to accept that is takes a long time.  Always have had to learn my lessons the hard way, and it doesn't look like patience is going to be any different.....

I also had the same thing happen at around 7 months. Now at 15 months and it's happening again just as bad as acute! Just the way it goes I guess. Hope u feel better soon.

Great website, thank you babyangel. I have parsley and am going to start eating more of it. I appreciate that link, as I used to be a healthy eater for the most part, actually craving healthy foods and oddly enough that just disappeared post withdrawal. The sugar cravings totally took over, and I stopped craving healthy food which I don't think has helped in my brain much..... Getting back on track, slowly. Hugs to you too:) Tracy
