On both Ativan and Prozac

Recommended Posts

I am planning on tapering the Ativan but I'm wondering if my symptoms are coming from Prozac. (I have severe IBS for 6 years) Do you need to taper one and then the other? Can you do them at once? I'd hate to try to taper and not address the symptoms. It would be confusing to say the least.

6 mg Ativan; 30 mg prozac; 1.8 mg remeron.

Thanks

DD

Most people believe it's best to taper the benzodiazepine first and then the AD.  I've seen others taper several meds at once as well, just making small cuts to each med.  It would seem like if you're tapering more than one at a time, you wouldn't know which medication was causing any symptoms that come up, however.

Very true.  Tapering a benzo can be sad enough without having the extra burden of feeling like your "glass is half empty"

b/z w/d raises Serotonin and suppresses Dopamine so it messes with all sorts of brain chemistry.

1.8mg of remeron?? That can't be right?  It's not even 1/8th of a therapeutic dose.

Heres the Remeron story.  I was on it back in 2004 when it was new, 30mg.  When I wanted to get off my Dr was very cavalier. I stopped taking them in a non-nuanced way 10mg per week cut out. Looking back i can see that I was having serious problems with it but I was in the psychofpharm ind complex and didn't think of it. But during that time I had serious TMJ and anxiety and was introduced to Ativan as needed.

Setbacks at work resulted in my need to go on Ativan.

I had the idea of taking a small amt of Remeron as needed for sleep and nausea (7.5)

I have been in a crisis with the meds and have not been at work and during this time I became accustomed to using the remeron every night again.

I tried to stop a couple of months ago and got hit with insomnia and severe anxiety.

So i began a taper of Remeron. To me it's a very addictive substance although it may be that I go up to 3.75 again for my benzo taper.

So small doses of Rem are meaningful to some just like those titrating off other drugs.

Are you sure you are correct on your Remeron dose. I have never heard of a dose that low. You are on a very large dose of Ativan. I had been on 5 mg but my last 9 weeks I was on 8 mg. I stopped cold turkey and went through a absolutely horrific withdrawal. In my opinion you need to do a very slow taper.
