After 20 (yes-20) years on diazepam 30 mg per day I went through 30 day detox.  I took this as prescribed.  I have joined this site to seek information and share mine as well about the experience I am having now.  My brain buzzes 24 hours a day, throbbing pain at the top, can't sleep through the night, etc.  Enough said.

Hello Dusty Joe.  Welcome to the forum, we're glad you found us!  Congratulations on getting off diazepam.  The symptoms you mention are not unusual, and hopefully you'll feel better soon.  Here are a few links you'll find useful:

Post-Withdrawal Recovery Support.

The Ashton Manual is an authoritative source on what to expect in withdrawal and recovery.  Dr. Ashton is an expert in the field.  She describes and explains withdrawal symptoms, and there is also a section with withdrawal/taper schedules.

Please take the time to Create a Signature.  This will allow others to see where you are in the process so they can better support you.

Again, welcome!

Hello Dusty Joe,

Welcome to the forum from me too  :)

Congraulations on being benzo free! I'm sorry to hear you are suffering, too rapid a taper off benzos after long term use is not a good idea and some nasty symptoms can result, slow tapering is the way to go but having said that you will make a full recovery with time, that's for sure. You are, almost certainly, in the acute phase of withdrawal at the moment, this is when symptoms are at their strongest. The strong symptoms will ease the further out you go but it can take a little while for the central nervous system to fully heal.

I will give you a link to The Cold Turkey, Detox & Rapid Withdrawal board where you can find other members in a similar situation to you. The members here will be able to empathise with you and it always helps, I feel, to compare stories with others who are in the same boat as oneself. Please feel free to ask for feedback about any of the symptoms that concern you, you can post questions on The Post-Withdrawal Recovery support board, Megan has given you a link to it.

I'm glad you found us and I do hope you are feeling much better very soon.

Welcome  :) I think you will find quite a few people here that were on benzodiazepines very long term. I took them for 13 years. I, too, did a detox, only mine was four days. The symptoms you describe are classic symptoms of benzodiazepine withdrawal. You do not say when you got out of the detox center but I think as you know the true withdrawal seems to begin after you detox. The acute phase of withdrawal brings on the worst symptoms. They are at there peak. This can last up to several months. After that symptoms usually become more manageable. I went through a horrific withdrawal and I am 11 months in and doing quite well. As unpleasant as your symptoms are they are only temporary. There will be a time when this is all behind you. :)
