Benadryl as a Sleep Aid

[sa...]

Recommended Posts

I had been having some trouble sleeping this past week and took 50 mg of Benadryl and it did help me sleep through the night. Is it o k to keep taking benadryl? 50 mg really seemed to make me really drowsy so i may try just 25 mg tonight, but am worried about becoming dependent long term.

I just recently made a small cut of .0625 to my nightly dose, so maybe if  I just wait a few more days my sleep will go back to normal without a sleep aid? My next cut will be on my noon dosage, so I am not as worried about it.

Is insomnia a symptom that can act up for a few days after a cut and then go back to normal sleep after a few days- week?

Yes. I would prefer to take doxylamine rather than Benadryl, because doxy seems to work better for a lot of people. Plus, I don't think it carries the stigma of quick tolerance or a hangover effect.

Doxylamine is a sleeping pill right? I think unisom has it. I would hate to have to depend on sleeping pills, but I may need to eventually.

Do you think I should just wait is out without sleeping aids and see if my sleep improves in s few days?

If you don't want to take a pill, you can take doxy in a cough/cold liquid.  I use Tylenol Multi-Symptom Cold.  It contains 6 mg doxy/tbsp.

But you don't become dependent to "pills", you become dependent to specific meds.  But the advantage of using a liquid is you can take really small doses.  When needed, I usually take about 1 tsp, which is only 2-3 mg.  Works great.

I think there is very little risk of dependence or tolerance with doxy.

For what it's worth I've taken Benadryl daily for about eight years, took a couple years off and went on other sleep meds and now back on it. Other than tolerance I haven't had any issues.

Thanks! I may try that. I am going to try magnesium tonight. I do feel that it will get better the next few days. I just need to stabalize a bit.
