My pain level ( on a scale of 1 to 10) starts first thing am at about 2 to 3. Usually after about 30 min to an hour it (jaw, neck, shoulder, pain) jumps to a 5 to 7 and stays there. What rx are you taking for your pain?

Hi,

Acetaminophen is relatively safe, depending on the dosage. It doesn't carry the risk of dizziness, which is my main problem. Ibuprofen can be okay, but it upsets my stomach. Nothing should be taken for a long time, of course, and anything stronger, e.g. codeine, is not an option for me AT ALL.

All medications have risks and side effects, and it's best to go without when possible. I use ice or contrast baths (hot/cold) for pain relief, and physiotherapy is my all-time number one pain reliever! It gets to the cause of the pain.

Best wishes,

Lapis2

I used ibuprofen without any trouble. I stay away from acetaminophen because of the possible liver damage. If you follow the directions on the bottle, you will be safe. Be aware that some withdrawal pain doesn't respond to pain killers. You might try a heating pad or ice.

Thanks East . I don't know if you remember , I use to respond alot to your post when things were bad. Thats been a while.

Thanks Lapis2

From your signature it look like you did a wise taper. Good luck

At this point in my recovery( 27 months off) is it possible an rx 2 to 3x aweek could slow my recovery?

I take 50 mg tramadol very sparingly, just to break the pain cycle.  Probably once or twice a week and wonder if I could take more.  I believe from my history I'm hypersensitive to rx.

I just filled a rx for flexaril, thought that might lessen the tension in my neck and shoulder. I thought maybe 2 to 3x a week  might be safe. Always afraid of slowing my recovery.

i think all medications have 'direct effects"....

gizmo,

lately the nerve and muscle pain is off the charts especially right when i wake up. it's unbelievable really. no one could take this amount of pain. i have my right shoulder just crushing and squeezing, sometimes both shoulders. and my left jaw and temple and face. and legs and knee's -- it goes on and one. the only thing i take is one excedrin at a time and i don't like doing that but nothing else works for the head pressure and headaches. i wish this would end already. i try to accept it -- but it's so hard to accept this.

pretty, I am with you. No one should have to put up with this pain! I am in SO much nerve pain, I don't know how I am going to last. Of course, I am just 3 mos. off tramadol, which may be one reason the nerve pain is worse. Hang in there, and I will try to also.

In my case, I'm in a big catch-22. The dizziness/boatiness makes it impossible for me to walk or do anything normally, which increases my foot/leg pain (a nerve issue not related to benzodiazepines). I can't take strong medications because they can affect my balance and strength. I've been told I'm "sensitive" to medications. Of course, I wish I hadn't taken any in the first place. :-(

It's one of "those days" today, and I've been bawling for hours already. I'm hanging on until my physiotherapy appointment later this afternoon.

For everyone else, if you find a medication (or something else) that works for you and you can live with all of the effects (direct, side and otherwise!), then you're lucky. Pain is stressful, and I think sentient beings try to avoid pain for good reason. It can be soul-sucking.

Hang on, Everyone! I wish you well.

daisy,

i think it's great that you are 3 mos. off the tramadol. in my experiences, being a pretty hard core opiate/pain killer addict, the body won't really be able to be rid of pain entirely until all meds are out of the equation and the receptor's have a chance to up regulate and heal. the nerve pain for me is getting better -- this morning there was hardly any nerve pain so i'm hoping this trend will continue.

i'm just really scared that my brain won't ever stop the pulling, squeezing, vibrations.

do you like that Formula 7 spot remover?

Well if tramadol helps then take it but it is habit forming both like an opiate and ssri. I was hooked on it for 7 years! I was able to ct norco and paxil when I started taking tramadol. That should say something. Flexeril has a withdrawal and I believe it's an old school ad that also relaxes muscles. It made me really tired so that might be a plus if u can't sleep. Didn't do a thing for my muscles.

gizmo,  just a heads up on the flexeril , my husband took it back in Aug for a month an half.. ( 13 Pills total ) so as needed when he stopped taking it the withdrawal was just like benzo withdrawal it was awful, thankfully only lasted a few weeks to fully get back to normal ...  was finally informed it happens to 1 %

Moe

My sx are mostly physical. Are his more physical or cognitive?  I don't want to set back my time that is written in the stars. I've taken 2 pills, one last night and one this morning.  Usually when I treat myself to an rx ( tramadadol ) to break the pain cycle, I might wait a week or more before I do it again.

His sx's were all cognitive.. started out with anxiety, he ended up so paranoid he thought I was going to have him committed. Happy to say he is completely back to normal ..

I too will take a tramadol once in a while for pain, usually not more then once a week, so far they do give me a lot of relief.

When pain gets really bad I get a shot of Toradol. It's heaven on earth for just about every pain in my body. Can only have it once a month.

A 4 day dose of prednisone will help also and very quickly, within 12 hours of the 1st dose. Can't take for more than those 4 days cause I get some side effects I can't stand. But it kicks out the pain and gives me a breather.

Am having epidural steroid injections in a week. Can't wait to see if this works as well as I'm praying it does. :)

I've had that too. Really good for pain, but as you state use conservatively.

Used to be a script, toradol is only available via IM.

Aleve and plain aspirin work, along with an epsom.salt bath.

Thanks Pretty,

I took a flexeril for a day and a half( 3 pills). It made me groggy and cranky.  It helped a little but not worth it.

for myself lately, i am convinced i need to just leave me brain alone. i have too much kindling that i couldn't take anything even if i wanted to. and the nerve pain gets so crushing sometimes that i do want to try that tramadol. but i am even taking a hiatus from all supplements for right now except a probiotic.

I've had terrible nerve pain and all nsaids give me bad GI erosion and bleeding. I tried gabapentin but had disabling side effects from it.  I do know some people who have used gabapentin very successfully and not had side effects, I was just one of the unfortunate.

What has worked best for me consistently has been topical Aspercreme.  It contains ibuprofen and absorbs through the skin so it works fast exactly where you need it. The topical cream also does not cause the gastric problems that taking it orally does.

Interestingly, I noticed that sometimes I would use it once or twice and the pain wouldn't return in that location for days to weeks.  I figure that the anti-inflammatory property must knock back the inflammation enough to stop the cycle of pain. It's always great when that happens! !!  But then I have to keep tapering and it always comes back, gosh darn it.  The fact that it DOES go away for periods of time, though, shows me that some fine day when ALL my receptors are healed, this will be but a distant memory.

If you haven't already tried it, I really recommend Aspercreme. I used the one without menthol added.

OneLove, you mean aspercreme helps nerve pain? I will try it. Thank you.

Well, I can really only speak for myself but it did help my nerve pain. It was great on my spinal pain. I also had a lot of nerve pain in my ribcage and it helped a LOT with that.

My massage therapist also found sore spots that she told me are "trigger points" so I started applying pressure to those several times a day. Much to my surprise, that has almost eliminated my nerve pain along with the pins and needles burning pain that wrapped from my spine all the way around to my sternum. It has been a game changer for me. I use my thumb on the front side and two tennis balls dropped in a sock that i lay on for my spine.

Hope that helps someone.

Sorry, I'm a late comer to this topic.  My computer has been in the shop for several issues and just haven't been able to get online.  But I'm glad I saw this topic as my own pain has felt unbearable these past weeks and I've been considering going on tramadol, too.  Right now I'm feeling very down and discouraged...too many things to deal with, not even counting this terrible cycle of sx's. I had surgery late July and it set me back considerably.  Muscle and nerve pain has been a huge issue and I've taken so much ibuprofen as well as Tylenol that my body will no longer tolerate it and my doctor is not at all sympathetic to the issues of benzo withdrawal. He is also leaving his practice so, once again, I have to find another doctor. You know...I feel like I've been hit by a tsunami and I'm drowning in the wave of all this mess.  Right now, I'm not encouraged.

constanthope,

i'm so sorry you are going through so much and that the surgery set you back but if you felt just a little better once before, that can only mean you will get there again so hang in there!

believe me, i know what the excruciating nerve and muscle pain feels like especially right when i wake up in the morning. i feel overly exposed and raw and it hurts just as much (i'm sure) as a cancer victim or something of that nature. i choose to not take anything for it and just allow it to subside on it's own. i am pretty good when it comes to a lot of excruciating pain, i can deal pretty well and have a high threshold. it's the discomfort of the brain symptoms and squeezing neuropathy that gets me down.
