Trying to taper off of alprazolam and I feel like crap!

I am a female who has been on alprazolam for chronic insomnia and anxiety.  Although I have taken about 2 mg for about 7 years, I have tapered down to 1 mg over the last two months.  Although this might seem like a small amount comparatively, it isn't working anymore but I refuse to take more.  I also take 50-75 mg of trazodone every night for depression.  I have a very high stress job managing a health club (irony is duly noted...) and am trying to learn other techniques like journaling, meditation & yoga. I feel terrible and need advice on how to taper off and still sleep at night without feeling crazy the next day.  I am reading The Ashton Manual but feel overwhelmed since my physician doesn't have a clue about tapering and thinks I should just stop cold turkey.  I feel like I'm going nuts and need help!

I am so happy you found us. I am sorry you are experiencing symptoms during your taper. The symptoms you describe are classic.

 

You might like to check out The Ashton Manual it is an authoritative source on what to expect in withdrawal and recovery.  Dr. Ashton is an expert in the field.  She describes and explains withdrawal symptoms.
