Exercise to reduce withdrawls during taper and c/o

Hi Everyone,

I've always been an athlete all my life...more recently for the past few years I've gotten into bodybuilding and did alright... no pro go, but was happy with everything. Anyhow, I'm trying to get back into the gym after taking 1.5 months off and I'm currently doing the Ashton c/o from Klonopin to Valium. Not tapering yet, still get stable, well - I'm only on day 6 of the crossover so, yeah...

My question is this...

Has anyone had success with exercise during this whole process? I like to lift weights for about an hour and then do moderate to intense interval cardio for 30-35 minutes 4-5/week. Could this actually be counterproductive to the healing process or help speed it up?

I also suffer from insomnia as well =(

and hope to run my system down with exercise after work

Thank you!

Like everything else benzo, my experience may be different from yours.  I exercised almost daily throughout my withdrawal.  Early on, I learned that intense exercising would rev me up, so I backed off my exertion level a bit (10-20%).  I did the same amount of exercise, but didn't get quite as worked up.  I also learned that I tolerated early exercise better than late exercise (mostly for sleep).  I gave up going to the gym after work, and did more exercise earlier in the day (e.g. lunch).

I think it's a good idea to remain as active as possible.  Just pay attention to how your body is reacting to it and adjust accordingly.

Hi Keep

I couldn't exercise at all for the first part of my taper, but when I was able to start working out I believe it came to be a key factor in my relatively easy taper and successful outcome. I'm a bodybuilder and do most of my aerobics with some intervals on a treadmill.

This piece will help explain the benefits of exercise in benzo damage healing: http://www.benzobuddies.org/forum/index.php?topic=77609.0

Good luck.

Hi Badsocref,

I wish it were possible for me to workout before work, but I doubt that will be a possibility... I'll take your advice and listen to my body, tone down the intensity if needed and take it from there...

Thank you for replying to my post!

Hey Keep

Thanks. I've been banging away to my heart's content for quite a while now. I still take a cocktail of the cortisol blockers I mentioned in my piece and sometimes will get some symptoms on a hard leg or back day. Just do as much as you can without getting more than mild symptom flare ups and you will be the better for it. There seems to be a lot of individual variation in this benzo tapering and exercise business.
