Why do benzos and alcohol make people feel depressed?

I'm not even physically feeling that bad today but I feel sad. I should feel happy that I'm having a good day. My co-worker complimented me on something and it didn't even slightly brighten my mood. I know nervous system depressants (like benzos and alcohol) with long-term use have the ability to cause depression.

The depression is not currently crushing or all-consuming, but I definitely feel "off." Anyone know why this is? Does the sadness eventually lift?

I had it explained to me like this: CNS depressants make you depressed because they're depressants.

He gotcha on this one.  Depressive=depressed.
