My life has been so destroyed that I have tons of time on my hands that cause me to just ruminate about everything I've lost.  My idle time makes me crazy and even more depressed.

Guided meditations on YouTube and walking my dog are great distractions.

 

Do you have the energy to get out and walk? Exercise really does help with depression.

I play online scrabble, listen to relaxation and positive affirmations on youtube, read, watch tv, knit, go for walks, go shopping.

Video games, rent dvds from library, watch military channel on YouTube (I like history), walk the block, yard work, stand in the sunlight if I'm too exhausted to work (sunlight really helps, so does exercise), jody Whitely guided hypnosis on YouTube, play with my cats, read if I'm up to it, post/lurk on benzo buddies.

Play games, read, play with my dog's, cook, cook and cook somemore, everyone is very fat here. But I have to do it or I 'll go crazy...Diane

My methods of distraction were: movies, mostly lighthearted comedies, books, puzzles and games (crosswords, scrabble, solitaire), taking short walks and reading Success Stories.  During the most intense part of withdrawal I would cycle through all of these throughout the day.

Another thing that helps is laughing.  I had almost forgotten how to laugh and how much tension it relieves.  I found that watching stuff like this helps:

I distract one moment at a time. I still do it 10 months out. If it wasn't for distraction I would be beside myself in anxiety.

Short walks, grooming my cats, cleaning, art/craft projects, laundry, hand-sewing, stringing beads, writing in my journal and Blog, answering Introduction Posts here on BB, home repair projects, reading.

If you like to laugh at over-the-top movies, check out www.thatguywiththeglasses.com and go to "nostalgia critic". Nostalgia critic gives short (15 min)  reviews of popular/ridiculously stupid movies, in a comedic fashion.  Most are pretty funny. I distract with him often.
