19 years on .5mg of Klonopin. Ready to quit.

As the title says.. 19 years is enough and I have been having tolerance withdrawal symptoms for 4 years now. The last year has been especially bad. I would like to hear from people who have specifically quit Klonopin and their recommended tapers for my dosage / duration. (.5mg for 19 years) I plan on starting my taper right away. I have read the Ashton manual but will not be crossing over to Valium as it is extremely sedating for me, which is not an option. I'm thinking at my relatively low dosage, a 100 day taper might be ok using a 100 ml liquid titration and reducing 1% a day?? Has anyone else done this schedule? Would it be too drastic toward the end? I do not want to risk protracted withdrawal. My main symptoms are indescribable fatigue and muscle pain, accompanied with anxiety, insomnia, and poor memory. Thanks and your experiences with Clonazepam (only) are appreciated. HH.

Hi Mister HH  Welcome to Benzobuddies

I am glad you’re  familiar with the Ashton Manual , it is an excellent resource for information about benzodiazepines and gives a lot of information about withdrawal.  A slow taper can help minimize withdrawal effects.  It is generally recommended to taper no more than 5-10% every 10-14 days.  This is a guideline and it is ok to adjust this schedule for your comfort.

We have a great community here of knowledgeable and friendly people who understand this process.  They will be willing to share their experience with you.  Feel free to ask questions so that members can respond

Hello MisterHH,

I too would like to welcome you to the forum  :)

I had also been suffering withdrawal effects because of tolerance when I joined the forum so I can empathise and sympathise with you. You've made a good decision to begin tapering.

I didn't taper off klonopin but your proposed taper rate sounds rather fast to me, you may be able to tolerate it in the early stages of tapering but you may have to slow down that rate as your dosage gets lower, this is what I had to do, in fact many members find the lower doses more challenging. Listening to how your body reacts to the cuts is a good idea with benzo tapering. If you  are feeling a little too symptomatic it is usually an indication that you are tapering too quickly in which case you would adjust your taper rate. Certainly slow and steady is the way to go, within the guidelines that Magrita has given you, to ensure that the withdrawal effects are kept minimised.

I'm glad you found us and I wish you success with the taper.
