Amoxicillin flare ups?

[Cr...]

Recommended Posts

I haven't been able to find much info on this in terms of others experience. I am currently 4 months out and have been gradually getting better with windows and less intense waves. I have noticed I am very sensitive to anything that works on gaba or the CNS and just recently had a tooth pulled that got infected. I was taking NSAIDS for the swelling which I know ramped up my symptoms and have been off them for a week, but I am on a 7 day course of amoxicillin for the obvious infection and the past two days my CNS symptoms have returned to near acute phase. I real somewhere that this class of antibiotics can have very minor effects on the central nervous system and I am wondering if anyone has had a similar experience/flare up. Could just be a bad wave, but I can't help but wonder if I'm triggering it by introducing medicines into my body. Last night was awful, felt like acute again. Any comments are greatly appreciated.

I think there is some minor effect on GABA-A.  I think the beta-lactam antibiotics act to some degree as GABA-A antagonists (benzos are agonists).  So perhaps, it could cause some flare-up - kind of like what a small amount of MSG might do.  I don't find a lot of literature on it, so I'm guessing it's not a common problem.  Obviously, you need to get rid of your infection.  Hopefully, your symptoms subside quickly after you're finished using the antibiotic.

Yes, I had exactly such a reaction to amoxicillin in January 2013 - about 13 months after I stopped taking clonazepam. I was put on a 10-day course of amoxicillin by my dentist, and my symptoms became so intense that I couldn't complete the course after day 7. I asked the dentist if I could stop, and I was told Oh sure, you didn't really need the amoxicillin anyway, it was just a precaution. During the following months I was put on antibiotics again, on two separate occasions, and had the same terrible reaction. On those occasions the antibiotics were amoxicillin the first time and augmentin the second time. Augmentin is a mixture of amoxicillin and a sort of booster chemical.

So yes, if you're having problems with amoxicillin, you're not imagining things. Talk to your doctor about it. Maybe you don't need to continue with the treatment.

Yes.  I had a terrible reaction to amoxicillin in month 6. I took two doses and was immediately in agony. Sudden obsewt of horrible intense head pressure.  insane anxiety..elevated b/p and crawl out of your skin jitters. It took about 7 days to back it down. Obviously I didn't take any more doses and my doctor switched me to an old time sulpha drug that zapped my throat infection.

....Glad you can go off it without needing to go to another.. Sorray this happened to you..coop

Thanks for the responses guys. Gotta be careful with what I take, so many reactions. Luckily I'm on my last day of it and I'm hoping the infection is gone so I can get back to healing. Really threw me outta wack, I'll be sure to avoid that class of antibiotics in the future.
