Anxiety when sick?

Is it normal for your anxiety to spike when your sick?  To have more withdrawal symptoms?  I've had a nasty cold for a few days now and my anxiety and withdrawal symptoms have definitely been spiking along with it.  Will this settle back down?? Am I back to square one?? I'm starting to even feel that familiar agoraphobia setting in!

Hey, emotionshateme.

Yes, it's totally normal for any / all of your withdrawal symptoms to spike when you're sick. I had a nasty cold during my taper. I took half a dose of Sudafed and it sent me into crazy anxiety and shaking - to the point I thought I was having a seizure.

Even before I took anything, I was feeling intense depersonalization / derealization and the cog fog was much worse.

I don't think this will set you back to square one. It didn't for me, and for other members I contacted to help me when I was going through this.

Just take it easy on yourself. If you're able to stay in bed and rest, drink plenty of fluids and soup, and watch tv, that's really the best cure.

Hope you feel better soon. It's rough having a cold during withdrawal. It definitely makes anxiety and other symptoms worse.

Hugs.

Okay... I am happy to know that it is normal at least.

Is there anything I can take over the counter that is safe?  I had been taking Mucinex - the liquid stuff that's for "severe cough and congestion" and that's when I noticed a LOT of the derealization returning.  I'm wondering if something in the medicine was bring it out more?  I haven't taken any yet today, but I'm probably going to have to later in order to be able to sleep and breathe!  I was carded at the pharmacy to get it, so I'm thinking it might have some sort of drug in it that can get people "high"?

I'm not sure. My reaction to half a dose of Sudafed leads me to believe even OTC meds can really do a number on you during withdrawal.

Whatever you decide, take a very small dose first and see how it affects you. If you're able to use things like rest, fluids, healthy foods, etc. that will be best.

I'd definitely stay away from the OTC meds that are "non-drowsy" as they tend to increase anxiety.

I feel the same way. I finally caught the cold that my kids have and I feel so bad...dizzy, out of it, that weird air hunger feeling, insomnia, anxious ...I'm knocked off my feet :(

Topped off with extreme anxiety but I can't sleep.
